For blood and wine are red

BALADA DE LA CARCEL DE READING (fragmento)

Ya no vestía su casaca escarlata,
roja por la sangre y el vino
y sangre y vino había en sus manos
cuando lo sorprendieron con la muerta,
la pobre mujer muerta a la que había amado
y a la que asesinó en su lecho.

El poema en su primer verso sugiere dolor y pasión.
Pero es en el verso siguiente que esa sugestión se vuelve explícita y el peso de la tragedia nos es revelado:"
Había sangre en sus manos".
Y es después que el dolor también explota y se explica el drama "A la que había amado" "A la que asesinó en
su lecho".
Toda una vida transcurre ante nuestros ojos: las fiestas, la felicidad y después los celos, el dolor, el odio, la
venganza. La desgracia, la infelicidad, y posiblemente el arrepentimiento.
En este poema la casaca escarlata, roja, la sangre y el vino son símbolos de fiesta, dolor y tragedia.
Diferente que en el toreo porque, en el toreo la sangre y la muerte no es asesinato, es trascendencia y el vino
es confraternidad y el color escarlata del traje de luces es compromiso con el arte.

The first line of the poem suggests pain and passion.
But it is in the next line verse where that suggestion becomes explicit and the burden of the tragedy is revealed.
"There was blood in his hands"
And, then, the pain explodes and the drama is explained. "The woman whom he loved" "And murdered in her
bed". A life goes by in front of our eyes: the parties, the happiness and later, jealousy, pain, hatred, revenge.
Disgrace, unhappiness, and, possibly remorse.
In this poem, the red scarlet coat, blood and wine are symbols of fiesta, pain and tragedy.
Different from bullfighting, since blood and death are not murder but transcendence, and wine is fraternity, and
the scarlet colour of the bullfighter's costume is a compromise with art.
