¿No juntara tanto vino?
THE MOCKER FROM SEVILLE AND THE
STONE GUES. (Act 1fragment)
For Cannan's sake!
How salty is the sea!
He who wants to be saved
Can swim here.
However, deep inside it is madness,
As death there awaits.
Why did God put so much water together
Instead of putting wine there?
No obstante, quiso

Although Tirso de Molina is one of the most prolific dramatists and poets of the Golden
Century, he did not really praise wine, and I am not referring to the way Omar Khayam did,
who valued wine more than money, power, wealth and love, but merely mention it.
Nevertheless, he wanted to give it importance as it is reflected in this fragment of The Love
Rogue, as if he was evocating the miracle of the Marriage at Cana in Catarino saving Don
Juan from the salubrious waters of Tarragona.
