Peristiwa J.E. Murray ini, oleh W. Gave Thomas dalam
buku karangannya yang berjudul Mu"ay Expedition to
Borneo yang diterbitkan di London pada tahun 1893 adalah
sebagai berikut:
In Pebruari 1844 The Young Queen and The Anna
two british trading brigs chartered and commanded by
an enterprising cot name The moon, Erakine Murray
arrived at Koetei on the East of Boeneo The local Sultan
gave warm welcome to Murray and his companion and
expressed and the hope that the re would be first of
many smilar visits by british merchants but the Leader
on the expedition asked permision to take up permanent
residence at Koetei, in order to protect british trade, his
request was premptorily refused.
This should undoubtedly have served as warning
but Murray very foolishly allowed his ships to be lured
up to Mahakam river ti Tenggarong a small twon some
twenty five miles from Samarinda.
The Sultan immediately stand up betteries of
gims along the rivers banks to prevent their escape,
Murray threaten to destory the town if not allowed to
proceed, but his bluff failed and he and his men had to
fight their way down the coast amid a strom of hostile
fire.
There, when they had almost succeed in the gauntlet
of Sultans goms, they were engaged by a large flotilla of
pirates and three number's of the expeditions, including
its Commanders were killed . 1 9 )
