Ranger/Naturalist I & II
Overall Job Objective:
To perform patrol, natural resources management, interpretive visitor education and outreach, use
management, and code enforcement tasks on OSMP properties; to prepare and deliver
environmental education programs; and to perform related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performing patrol, code enforcement, visitor education and outreach, resource protection, and
interpretive tasks on OSMP properties:
• Monitors properties and responds as needed to illegal activity, unsafe conditions, visitor aid,
and range management needs; issues tickets or warnings for violations of OSMP
regulations, performs minor repairs or summons help to remedy unsafe field conditions or
range management problems that need immediate attention;
• Interacts with the public while on duty to provide information on natural history,
management policies, and visitor opportunities;
• Maintains daily written patrol shift logs that include time, location, and content information
on public contacts, problems encountered, wildlife and unusual plant sightings, resource
damage, and so on;
• Assists with and may coordinate emergency responses to include administering first aid, law
enforcement activities, search and rescue, and wildlife incidents;
• Assists with and performs wildland fire suppression and fire management tasks to include
assessment, suppression, incident command, and coordination with other agencies;
• Conducts back country hiking patrols, including wildlife closure areas and climbing areas;
monitors recreational activities on OSMP properties, and uses education and enforcement
methods to ensure visitor safety and resource protection;
• Conducts horse patrols and assists in care of horses and related maintenance tasks;
• Enforces parking fee system; and
• Performs on-call standby duties and conducts evening and night patrols as needed.
2. Preparing and delivering environmental education and interpretive programs to support the
OSMP Department’s public education and outreach activities:
• Develops and conducts environmental education programs for the general public,
organizations, special use groups, and educational institutions to include nature walks,
audio-visual programs, hikes, and evening “fireside” talks;
• Provides input and may assist with developing interpretive signs and sign boards,
educational brochures, and interpretive facilities and trails programs; and
• Assists with preparing and presenting informational programs about the OSMP system to
city council, the OSMP board, and other public entities interested in the department’s
programs, components, and operations.
