4.3 Electrical and Small Power
4.3.1 Electrical Meter Cupboard
A proper, 30 minute fire rated cupboard is
required around all electrical switchgear and
metering installations.
Not only must distribution boards, meters and
other such items be enclosed in a proper
cupboard, but the clearances in front are
specified and the need for enough room to
work to replace any faulty items is also specified.
This means that the off-the-shelf access doors
that some contractors like to use are barely big
enough and if used they MUST be positioned to
give the regulation access.
The ideal is a 30 minute fire rated hinged door
although it doesn’t necessarily need to be a
full size person door. Please note also, that if a
cupboard needs to be built, then it must be sized
to not only contain the electrical equipment but
must still allow clear passage for anyone who
needs to get past in the corridor.
The following sketch illustrates, in general terms,
what is required.
Door and cupboard
enclosure to be fire
rated to a min. of 30
minutes, lockable, with
appropriate signage.
