YOUTH IN EMERGENCY SERVICES
            Applications are now being accepted for the Wairarapa’s Youth in Emergency Services
            Programme 2018.
            Youth in Emergency Services is a collaborated project between New Zealand Red Cross and
            the Ministry of Youth Development with the support of local emergency services such as;
            WREMO (Wellington Region Emergency Management Office), LANDSAR (Search & Rescue);
            Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Red Cross’s Disaster Welfare Support Team.

            The Youth in Emergency Services (YES) programme aims to foster an on-going and
            sustainable relationship between young people and the volunteer emergency services. The
            programme is designed to grow and strengthen young people’s connection to their
            community by encouraging them to engage with a range of emergency services through a
            structured training phase, combined exercise and volunteering phase.

            The YES programme will build your capability, resilience, and sense of connection to your
            community by offering you new and challenging opportunities to demonstrate your
            leadership skills and to experience a sense of contribution and
            responsibility.
            The programme is run in two phases;

            Phase one
                    We will hold an introductory evening on the 31st of July
                    and then you will be training with emergency services
                    (with a Tuesday evening and a Sunday commitment –
                    these sessions will vary in length) over a 6-week period (between the 7th of August
                    and the 16th of September) to learn skills and gain knowledge specific to emergency
                    management within each service. Phase one is completed through a combined
                    exercise on the 23rd of September.

            Phase two
                    Opportunities to volunteer will be available over a two-month period so you can
                    continue to develop skills and knowledge as well as provide you with hands on
                    involvement with the emergency services. The voluntary component will vary
                    depending on which organisation is chosen to volunteer with, but we hope for a
                    commitment of up to 2 hours per week over the 2-month period.

            At the completion of the two phases there will be a graduation dinner where young people
            will be recognised for their contribution and completion of the programme. Details on this
            event will be provided closer to the time.
            When participants are required to travel to off-site activities transport will be provided from a
            meeting point. The meeting points and times will be outlined on your timetable which will be
            available at the introduction evening. We aim to provide some transport to and from
            activities, where feasible.
