CATEGORY: DOING WHAT IT TAKES
NOMINEE NOMINATOR DEPARTMENT
James Kuzmik Amanda Copeland Process Research 400300
Describe the situation or event related to the individual's or team's performance.
Five foam soap batches were found to have white particulate floating throughout the liquid. All were red-tagged
and Jim was recruited to complete lab batches to determine the suspect raw material(s). Jim contributed by
screening raw material lots- he came in on off-shifts and weekends when new lots of raw materials were
received so that he could accept or reject materials as quickly as possible and keep manufacturing in-
specification product. He also was the chief investigator to determine the root cause of the particulates. Jim
worked efficiently, making lab batches and traveling between Lippman and Plaza to hand-deliver samples so
that appropriate R&D personnel could view them and complete additional analysis. He stayed focus on the
task at hand and truly exemplified "Doing What It Takes" throughout the investigation.
Describe in detail the individual's or team's notable behaviors.
Jim exhibited the following skills during this investigation that set him apart from the rest:
-Organizational agility in being able to reach out to the right parties to get information including multiple
formulators, analytical scientists, surfactant suppliers, and manufacturing technicians
-Customer Focus in realizing that while we had to identify the root cause, we also had to make sure
manufacturing could make in-spec batches to complete customer orders- Jim alone approved new lots of
surfactant!
-Appropriate Communication was key as Jim kept all pertinent parties up to date with the status and continued
to ask for feedback and ideas from others
-Steadfastness in working towards a solution- not many would come to GOJO in the middle of the night or on
weekends to make lab batches and he did so- without a single complaint!
What were the results of the individual’s or team’s behaviors?
Jim ensured business continuity by swiftly addressing five out-of-specification foam soap batches. He worked
tirelessly, making lab batches and approving each lot of raw material to arrive so as to proceed with making in-
specification product.
