TEARS OF SUFFERING
His body trembled; he hid his face in his hands and
sobbed. Au Lham embraced him and sobbed bitterly.
They shed tears in each other’s arms for a while.
Au Lham gave him a hundred-ngultrum note. “It’s
meager, but you’ll need this.”
“No, thank you,” he said. “I don’t need it.”
She insisted.
He tiptoed and knocked on Ama’s door. “Sorry for
disturbing you, but I thought I would see you before I
go.”
“Never mind.” She reached for her handbag. “Here, take
this. Study hard. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need more
money. And remember, Au Samphel will come to pick
you. All you need to do is wait at the bus booking, okay?”
Ugyen nodded.
“Go now. You will get late.”
Before he walked out, he hugged Au Lham again. “Thank
you, Au, for everything you have done for me.” Before
he disappeared into the rosy dawn, he glanced back at Au
Lham.
Au Lham waved at him with tears.
Ugyen disappeared.
