TEARS OF SUFFERING
“No,” said Tshoden as she walked away. “Why?”
Samphel scurried after her and placed the letter in her
hand. “Read it!” From behind the gate, he shouted, “I am
leaving tomorrow. Don’t ever try to find me.”
She scurried to her dorm and read the letter. She read it
again and again, till her tears bloated the paper.
Doctor and Ama froze on hearing the news. And Au
Lham missed him terribly. Sometimes, she heard Ugyen’s
voice, and when she realized he wasn’t there, she covered
her face in her hands and sobbed bitterly.
In college, Tshoden often recollected the times she had
spent with Ugyen. When nobody befriended her, she
realized the value of true friendship. Samphel had come
into her life and left like a migrating songbird that
deceived with a mellifluous song, but she couldn’t forgive
herself for her perfidious action towards Ugyen.
Weeks later, the matron called her to the phone. She
scurried and picked the receiver, “Hello?”
There was no reply from the other end. “Hello?” she said
again.
“Tshoden?” said from the other end. “It’s me…”
“Who?”
“Ugyen.”
