TEARS OF SUFFERING
Her heart pricked, she murmured, “Why is Samphel
ignoring me?”
The next day, Tshoden saw Samphel walking with a
glamorous girl. Hands covering her mouth, she rushed
back to her dorm, slammed the door, and curled up on
the floor. Tears rolled down her cheeks and there was not
a soul to console her. She missed Ugyen, who had stood
by her all the time; he would wipe her tears and recite
jokes until she laughed. Now that nobody was there to
console her, she cried like a lost child in the middle of
nowhere.
She sniffled harder, realizing how Ugyen must have cried
when she ditched him. She sat there, brooding all day,
wishing she had never been born. “I am sorry, Ugyen. I
am sorry. Forgive me, please!”
Three days later, there was a knock on Samphel’s door.
Samphel saw a boy, smiling at him. “Yes?” he said.
“Are you Samphel?” said the boy.
“Yes, can I help you?”
“A letter for you from Ugyen.”
He snatched it. “From Ugyen? How’d you know him?”
“We were on the same bus,” said the boy. “He got down
at Trongsa.”
