Discipline
A positive learning environment is vital and must be maintained; however, discipline with dignity
is the goal of The Lawson Academy. The administration supports teacher-centered discipline that
contributes to a positive classroom environment. The student handbook outlines general behavior
expectations.
If there have been numerous documented behavior interventions attempted by the teacher, as well
as parent contact and conference with the teacher, and progress with behavior has not been made,
the teacher may refer the child to the counselor. All parents have provided signed permission at
the time of enrollment for counseling services, as needed. Student eligibility will be confirmed by
the counselor before services are rendered.
Teaching is a tough but rewarding job. You will be expected to carry your share of the load,
especially in discipline. The administration is here to help you when you need help, but you will
be expected to handle routine problems yourself. The following suggestions have weathered the
test of time and may help:
• Have complete and meaningful lesson plans;
• Reduce time for routine chores (roll call, passing out papers, etc.) to a minimum. You can
always take roll once students get to work;
• Make sure that class activities last the entire scheduled class period;
• Keep accurate records of grades and make students aware of grades. You must have a
minimum of 3 (three) grades per week, per subject.
It is recommended that teachers find out about a student’s home life before making decisions about
behavioral interventions.
It is mandatory that every teacher maintain a classroom discipline log that should be updated
weekly.
Remember that positive measures are always preferred. Your disciplinary measures should be
corrective and directly aligned to the strategies outlined in the Consistency Management &
Cooperative Discipline (CMCD).
Level 1: Disciplinary infractions that can be managed in the classroom setting and students
behavior redirected without further action required
PLEASE HANDLE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS SUCH AS
CHEATING, THROWING THINGS, EXCESSIVE TALKING, ETC.
• Establish yourself as the authority in your classroom;
