A Design Palette That Respects History and
Allows for New Contemporary Design
Like many Post-Industrial Colonial Cities, Dover is steeped in a rich
menagerie of Historic structures spanning multiple centuries. The
dominant material palette of Dover’s buildings represents this; with the
main construction element being redbrick, supplemented by elements
finished with lap siding and wrought iron. While variations exist within
the materials in terms of color and treatment, the prevailing trinity of
brick, lap and painted wood accents and filigree permeate across the
spectrum of building types within the downtown core.
In order to retain the character and feel of Downtown Dover, new
developments should operate and be conscious of this existing material
palette, finding invention within complementing the existing built
environment rather than attempting to replicate. Replication of historic
detailing detracts from the character and ethos of the historic buildings
which serve as the backbone and soul of the district.
