IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
LORRAINE V. YASAY
This study dealt on the collaborative roles of the physicians and nurses employed in
selected tertiary hospitals in Baguio City. Part 1 dealt on the respondents’ profile that includes
their age, sex, civil status, length of service and relative trainings attended. Part II focused on
the collaborative roles of the respondents along medication administration, medication safety
practices, patients monitoring, emergency interventions and infection control. Part III tackled
on the significant differences in the collaborative roles of the respondents across their profile
variables.
Descriptive research design was used using the questionnaire as the main data
gathering tools. Statistical tools utilized include the frequency and percentage, weighted mean,
t-test and the ANOVA.
Based on the data gathered the findings are the following: majority of the respondents
are nurses and physician, most of them are in age bracket of 21-39 females, married, and in the
service for 5 years and below and majority of them had 10 or more seminars attended.
In terms of their collaborative roles along medication administration, medication
safety practices, patient monitoring, emergency interventions and infection control are highly
performed. On the significant differences in their collaborative roles across their profile variables,
it was found to be not significant.
Based on the findings of the study the following conclusion are offered:
The respondents are health professionals in the nursing and medical side, mostly young
adults, female who had been bonded with the sanctity of marriage and had been employed for a
long time and attended several training related to their profession. There is good collaboration in
their roles along the five areas as indicated by the results which is highly performed. Their profile
variables did not affect their collaborative roles with one another. The respondents had shown
to be working well with each other in terms of patient safety. A proposed program is prepared
to further improve the collaborative roles between physicians and nurses.
Based on the conclusions the following recommendations are offered. The respondents
must continuous update themselves in terms attending more relevant trainings or seminars
to be abreast with the innovations in the field of medicine. They must keep up with their
collaborative roles to improve patient outcomes. They must continue to work collaboratively to
uplift their profession for a better service to those in need of their care. The proposed program
can be adapted in their own hospitals.
A similar study can be conducted in a wider perspective.
