in education; 2) To get full support from parents, teachers and school heads should establish a
             better human relationship with the officials and members of the PTA and all community folks;
             3) The school personnel should provide necessary mechanism to motivate parents to do their
functions and roles for the maximum educational development of the learner; 4) The school
must prepare a more realistic program for the PTA that could encourage them to strengthen
their support; 5) Similar studies should be undertaken on the partnership of the school and
the parents in private secondary schools as basis for comparison; 6) Future studies should be
conducted to look into other concerns of parents and teachers partnership.

PERFORMANCES IN PHYSICS OF GRADE 8 STUDENTS IN
                                   PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS

This study determined the performance of Grade 8 students in Physics in public
secondary schools of the Urdaneta City Division for SY 2014-2015. Specifically, it sought to
determine the profile of student respondents in terms of sex, place of residence, parents’
educational attainment, occupation of parents, family size, and time spent in studying Physics,
study habits, attitude towards the study of Physics, level of students’ performance in Physics as
a whole and per learning areas; light, sounds, electricity, work and energy and motion. It also
determine the profile of the teacher-respondents in terms of highest educational attainment,
length of service in teaching Physics, trainings/seminars attended, methods used in teaching,
average number of students per class, and number of teaching preparations, Likewise, it looked
into the available home reading materials, facilities and science equipment of Grade 8 students,
Moreover, it proposed an enhancement program to improve performance of students in Physics.
The following salient findings were drawn 1) majority of the students-respondents are
females with 202 or 50.63 percent and reside in rural areas as claimed by 294 students or
73.69 percent whose parents have attained high school level of education and non-professional
workers as revealed by 389 students or 97.49 percent and whose family sized is 5-6 members
as indicated by 120 students or 30.08 percent. Many of the students spent one hour and below
in studying physics with 183 students or 45.86 percent and have attitude towards their study of
Physics which they find to be difficult to comprehend 2) the highest educational attainment of the
Grade 8 teachers in Physics is bachelor’s degree with Masteral units, as indicated by 14 teachers
or 43.75 percent which are in the services for 3 to 6 years and have attended district and division
in-service trainings whereas few of them have attended higher levels of training such as in the
regional and national levels. All the grade 8 teachers used inductive and Experimental Methods
in teaching Physics and handled 46-50 students as their average number of students with 78.13
percent, 15 teachers claimed that they have four (4) teaching preparations with 46.88 percent 3)
few students have home reading materials such as science books with 3.76 percent, newspapers
with 2.51 percent while the rest have dictionaries, science journals and science magazines.

                                                                                     40
