Parkside Football Club 1897/2017

Parkside clashed with Sunshine YCW in round five under extremely unusual weather conditions. That
Saturday, in May 1998 the fog got so thick at Sunshine YCW that in order to finish the match, the
club turned their lights on as Parkside proved just a bit steadier on the day to defeat Sunshine YCW
               by 16 points.

The Magpies, with good first and third quarters, established a handy five-goal lead at three-quarter
time, but the Shiners came home with a wet sail, kicking six goals to two, but could not bridge the
               gap.

Stephen Nielson, kicking eight goals, was best on ground. Other Magpies to do well were Neale
Gunning, Joe Patterson (roving well), Michael Ryan and Harold Kelly (five goals — also having a top
               season).

This is how The Mail described the match from round six between Parkside and Spotswood.

“Shaping as a big threat to Port Colts, Parkside really blitzed Spotswood winning by 74 points in one
of the Magpies' best wins over the Woodsmen for many seasons.

Spotswood opened with the strong breeze at their backs but could manage only a two-goal lead at
               the first change.

Possibly, this quarter was the undoing of the Woodsmen, as they never fully recovered. Jeff Bebend
really moved his players about — but to no avail — as the Magpies just went from strength to
strength to record an easy win.

Roosting seven goals, Phillip O'Keefe produced as best-on-ground performance; the general leading
               the troops into attack.

Other Magpies to do well were Michael Cammerino, Harold Kelly, Paul Burgess and Nicholas
               Hatzoglou.”

               Parkside 22.11-143 d. Spotswood 10.9-69
