Page 54 - Producing a Video to Communicate a New Model of Coaching to GAA Coaches
P. 54

‘We haven’t acted well enough or consistently enough as a model for the change, and in
some cases, we have reinforced the dominant culture by doing nothing to change it. And
fundamentally, has my own behavior as a ‘leader’ been that of a role model???’
(JD Journal, Oct 28, 2015 - On Leading an eLearning Culture)

4.2.3 Connecting to the Known - What does the Literature say?

To support my study I initially delved into the literature on coaching in sport and

instructional design in video production to seek a basis for the production of a video that
                                                                               10’
would communicate the essential elements of the ‘Coach model while managing
cognitive load. However, as my thoughts developed on my research, and in particular on
what it is that I value, I began to focus on the use of narrative in learning, principles for

the production of digital stories and the evocation of emotion through the development

of a social partnership between my video subject and the viewer.

‘I am interested in telling the story of a coach and linking that back to the model. An
inspirational coach explaining their take on coaching could really bring the model to
                                                                life.’

                        4.3 Understand

4.3.1 My Experience, Practice and Understanding

Since being first employed by the GAA in 2001 I have developed extensive

experience; fundamentally, an ability to understand the essence of Daly’s vision, and
I believe, a theoretical and practical understanding that allows me to conceptualise

that vision within the body of practice that is the work and experiences of GAA
Coach Educators and Coaches, and within broader learning and development

                        frameworks.

I perceive my role within the broader GAA Coach Education context as, in many

ways, being a conveyor of Pat Daly’s vision, a designer and developer of mechanisms

to communicate key messages and as a facilitator of learning experiences. In my
work I aim to help coaches connect their experiences and needs to the models,

frameworks and initiatives that evolve and embody GAA policy. Video 4.1 shows
                                                                                  10’
