me, my situation, and to society. If one makes sense or meaning through relationships,
can this be created through video? This is my challenge.’

4.4.1 My Vision
From my research of the literature and through my reflections I began to create a vision
for my resource that was in tune with my values. I wanted to create a video resource that
10’
describes and explains the ‘Coach model through a narrative structure, and through
the authentic story of a high-profile coach’s experience of what they know and find to
10’
be important in coaching. To that end the video would not only reflect the ‘Coach
model as it is described by Daly (2014), nor would it solely be my interpretation of it;
rather it would be a narrative on effective coaching achieved through a process of
dialogue and collaboration between myself and my video subject, and structured
according to - and to reinforce - the core constructs of the model. The video would be
filmed as an interview.
A key reference for my initial vision was a video of the Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan
interviewing the late Irish philosopher John Moriarty (Video 4.3). Apart from the
subject matter, three elements of the video stood out for me – the first was the use of
close-ups of Moriarty’s face and hands to communicate intimacy and emotion, the
second was the setting, which in Moriarty’s home was informal, comfortable for him as
the subject, and told so much about him, and the third was the segmentation or chunking
of the video to address specific questions or topics.
