Page 60 - Producing a Video to Communicate a New Model of Coaching to GAA Coaches

4.4.2 My Subject - Paudie Butler
Based on my personal and professional relationship with Paudie Butler, I decided to ask
Paudie to be the subject of my video (Appendix E, F). Butler is one of the Association’s
foremost Coach Education Tutors and Tutor Trainers, and is a constant advocate of
Coach Development initiatives. He is consistently interpreting and integrating Daly’s
vision into the broader coaching framework and coach education process. He could well
be regarded as a philosopher himself, and has been referred to as an ‘evangelist’ in an
article at the end of his tenure of employment by the GAA as National Director of
Hurling (The Irish Examiner, April 16, 2011).As a mentor and role model of mine, my
vision was that Paudie’s story would ground the knowledge, make it real, and help those
others watching make new sense of coaching through a connection with his story too.
4.4.3 Preparation for an Authentic and Emotive Story
Keeping in mind Werner Herzog’s idea that it is important that the interview was not
overly scripted to maintain authenticity, and to avoid prescribing the story that Paudie
would tell, I produced a set of descriptive statements to explain the model (Appendix
10’
G). These statements are based on my understanding of the ‘Coach Model but do not
overly reflect the terminology used to define the core constructs of the model as
described by Daly (2014).
Following the advice of Robin (2008) I then produced a storyboard (Appendix H)
around the descriptive statements to define each element of the model and to identify
the type of cut away shots or ‘shot descriptions’ - as they are described in the storyboard
- that would best reinforce each element.
Using the storyboard as a reference point, and through a series of preparatory dialogues
with Paudie, I endeavoured to refine the questions I would ask of him in the interview in
a way that would allow me to ‘introduce’ each element and allow Paudie to respond
with his ‘take’ on it.
To engage the viewer and create an emotional connection with Paudie I would frame
him in a relatively close-up shot as recommended by ‘No Film School’, while ensuring
that his hand motions could be seen.
Other key references in my preparation would be Lambert’s (2010) ‘Seven Steps for
Digital Storytelling’ (Appendix I) and Koumi’s Pedagogic Video Design Principles
