3.4 Particulars of the Research
3.4.1 Participants
Throughout this research process I collaborated with my college peers and
supervisors, work colleagues, and the parents and pupils of our school who are
central to this research. The main participants in the ‘Parent Learning Zone’ videos
included myself, our school librarian Jane Kingston and pupils from the ages of 4-12
years. The pupils were chosen by their teachers as they were deemed to be fluent
readers for their age group and also confident in expressing their ideas and opinions
in front of others and on camera. The selected subjects consisted of four pupils from
sixth class and one pupil from second class. The sixth class pupils demonstrated the
reading strategies such as reading with intonation, expression, fluency, pace and
making predictions about the story by using the illustrations on the front page. The
second class pupil read aloud with our librarian who asked questions throughout the
story, demonstrating the importance of reading comprehension and the four main
levels of comprehension - literal, interpretive/inferential, critical and creative
comprehension.
I also filmed a small group of pupils in high-infants during a lesson where the
learning objective was learning phonics. Jane Kingston was chosen as one of the
