15. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Cub Scouts in the Gold Stage of the programme should be
able to take an active part in helping others in times of disaster.
To do this you must BE PREPARED.
TAKE PART IN THREE ACTIVITIES PLANNED BY THE
LEADERS OF YOUR PACK TO TEACH YOU ABOUT WAYS TO
HELP DURING AND AFTER A DISASTER OCCURING IN THE
BAHAMAS.
Here are some ways you can help:
1. Rendering first aid.
2. Tent pitching to house people.
3. Preparing a hot meal.
4. Summoning help.
5. Taping windows before a storm or hurricane.
6. Cleaning up after a storm, etc.
Akela could ask the Director at the Office of Disaster Preparedness N.E.M.A.
(National Emergency Management Agency) to give a talk to the Pack and let you
know how you can take part in any simulated exercises. You could also approach
the Red Cross to see how you can help, and why not check with the Police about
Road Safety Week.
Try for the Cyclists, First Aid and the Rescuers Proficiency Badges.
16. WATER ACTIVITIES
Your training in water activities will enable you to help other people who get
into difficulties, as well as provide you with valuable exercise and lots of fun.
(a) UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN EXPERIENCED SWIMMER OR WATER
INSTRUCTOR, PARTICIPATE IN A PLANNED
SWIMMING PROGRAMME OVER A THREE
MONTH PERIOD.
Ask Akela to enquire about any swimming
programme you could join, also check at the
Ministry of Youth and Sports to see if there are any
such programmes at their large pool.
