When your Parents, Relatives or Guardians
come to the event they will be pleased and proud to
learn that you played a part in the planning. They
will also be very pleased and excited to attend
because you have invited them.
Perhaps this could help with gaining the
Entertainer Proficiency Badge.
13. DRUG AWARENESS/PROTECT YOURSELF
Earlier in our programme you learned that some people use drugs as a form
of entertainment. You also learned that drugs used to reduce pain and prevent
illness can be dangerous if not used correctly.
(a) LEARN ABOUT SOME OF THE DANGERS TO YOUR HEALTH IF YOU
MISUSE DRUGS. TELL THIS TO THE PACK AND AKELA.
Many people drink beer or spirits,
smoke cigarettes, cigars or pipes as a form of
entertainment. Although these items are not
regarded as illegal drugs they are still drugs
and can be dangerous to your health if
abused. The mind, brain, body and internal
organs can be affected by excessive drinking.
Smoking can cause cancer in the body and
usually has the smoker coughing badly. Some
people get out of breath at the smell of
tobacco, even when not smoking.
Other people prescription drugs should
never be used by anyone else, even if they
have similar symptoms. As everybody is
different when it comes to prescription drugs.
(b) TELL YOUR PACK WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE SOME OF THE ILLEGAL
DRUGS USED IN THE BAHAMAS.
You can read in the local newspapers and hear on the radio about people
being caught by the police in possession of Marijuana, Cocaine or Crack. These
are not only illegal but are also harmful to your health.
If someone encourages you to try any of these, say “NO!” and tell your
parents or your teachers or any adult friend as soon as you can. Perhaps Akela
could invite someone from CADA (Council for Alcohol and Drug Awareness) or from
the Police Drug Squad to talk to the Pack.
