When lighting the fire keep your back to the wind so
as to protect the flame of the match. The food to cook
and the ingredients for the hot drink can either be
brought from home or perhaps the Pack could obtain
them, especially if you know a friendly store keeper or
owner who would donate them.
Do not play with matches, especially in the home. If
you see your brothers or sisters, or your friends, or even
children you do not know playing with matches, stop
them, as this can, and has, in the past, caused serious
fires which have burnt down homes and injured children.
(b) KNOW HOW TO PUT OUT THE FIRE AND LEAVE
THE PLACE TIDY.
A fire should never be left unattended and should always be completely
extinguished when you leave. The fire should be put out with water and any large
pieces of wood removed from the ashes.
When Cub Scouts leave a camp site there should be no signs of a fire ever
being there. Check the area and remove all garbage. As a Cub Scout you should
leave nothing but your Thanks.
As you continue to spend time outdoors, visiting and seeing interesting
locations, you will find that there is a need to know how to make yourselves
comfortable, and at home, in these natural surroundings.
It would be interesting to work for the Explorer, Camper or Cook Proficiency Badge.
9. COLLECTING
(a) MAKE A NEW COLLECTION OF NATURAL OBJECTS, OR ENLARGE UPON
YOUR SILVER ARROW COLLECTION.
(b) MOUNT THE ITEMS ON CARD OR IN TRAYS OR BOXES IN A SYSTEMATIC
MANNER.
(c) PREPARE CARDS GIVING INFORMATION ABOUT THE ITEMS: NAME, DATE
AND PLACE FOUND.
Once you have gathered all your natural objects, lay them out neatly on the
card, trays or in the boxes. Make some attractive labels and write neatly or have
them typed, or type them yourself. Take your time and make a good job of the
collection.
