7. DISCOVERING NATURE
As part of your Nature and Conservation learning, you should:
(a) BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THREE TYPES OF TREES AND STATE THE
USE OF THEIR WOOD AND/OR FRUIT.
There are many kinds of trees in The Bahamas so you should
have no trouble in selecting three. I am sure you know where there is
a Mango Tree, a Guava Tree and an Avocado Tree. I am sure that
you know where these trees are located. Find out what materials
the fishermen use to make their Fish traps. Investigate the use of
the Mangroves and find out how many varieties there are in The
Bahamas.
With your Six, find out about the World Conservation
Badge.
( b ) 1. BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY –
THREE BIRDS AND STATE THEIR
FEEDING AND NESTING HABITS; 2. THREE
CREATURES THAT LIVE IN THE SEA OR ON THE
SHORE. STATE THEIR USE, IF ANY TO MANKIND.
Visit your School Library or the Public Library and
look at the nature books, also check with the
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. We see birds
every day, so you should be able to identify them from pictures or photo's and get to
know their names and their uses to mankind. Probably Akela could invite someone
who takes part in the December bird count in The Bahamas to take you on a walk
and point out the different kinds of birds and give you their names and other
information. They could also give you a list of the birds which live in The Bahamas
or pass through.
Look up the details of the Naturalist and Photographer Badges.
8. EXPLORING
To show that you are ready for the outdoors, you must:
(a) LIGHT A FIRE OUT DOORS, COOK A LIGHT MEAL AND MAKE A HOT DRINK
(UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION).
Akela or any of your Leaders can show you how to build and light a fire
outdoors, using dry grass or leaves in the centre, building up with thin twigs and
then thicker ones.
