The shallow tray is supported on a short circular foot rising
from rounded sides to an everted barbed rim. The interior with
a slightly sunken centre and gently curved cavetto is covered
overall with dark brown lacquer with the exception of the rim and
exterior painted in red lacquer.

Provenance:

According to the original Japanese wood box, the dish was
gifted from ‘Kenkou’ to the Kohou-an Temple located at the
Daitokuji Temple, Kyoto, dated 20 September 1848. ‘Kenkou’
possibly refers to Tokugawa Narikatsu, also known as KenSho-in,
who was a 12th generation member of the Kishu branch of the
Tokugawa family
