A rare CARVED CINNABAR 200
LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX
AND COVER 163
MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
The cover is carved with a garden scene
depicting a lady seated in a fenced garden
and extending her arms towards a child,
against three diaper grounds representing
air, water and land. The rounded sides of
the box and cover are carved with shaped
cartouches enclosing florettes, with a band
of upright lappets encircling the base.

QIANLONG-JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820)
The shallow dish is carved on the central
interior with a stylised cell pattern
enclosed by a keyfret band. The well is
carved through the red layers to the ochre
ground with four five-clawed dragons
chasing flaming pearls and flying amidst
ruyi-shaped clouds. The exterior is carved
with a similar cell pattern all raised on four
short bracket feet.
