PARETO ANALYSIS - Using the 80:20 Rule to Prioritize

Pareto Analysis uses the Pareto Principle – also known as the "80/20 Rule" – which is the idea that 20 per-
cent of causes generate 80 percent of results. With this tool, we're trying to find the 20 percent of work
that will generate 80 percent of the results that doing all of the work would deliver. If you have multiple
problems tackle the biggest problem first, and if there are multiple causes of a problem, tackle the biggest
cause first. There will be 80% of the cost coming from 20% of the problems, so tackle that key 20% first—
it's not 4x as powerful; it's actually 16! This applies to costs, waste, breakdowns, customer service issues,
lateness and sickness, cost of stock, time wasters, and virtually everything.
