P. 72
Now, don’t miss this gospel picture of death:
When we die, we do the same thing I’ve been talking about.
Like his child, we crawl up on Father’s lap, at least spiritually
speaking. We let him put his arms around us. He loves on us, and
we love on him. We just go to sleep on his lap, and wake up on
his lap in heaven. Even though we wake up in heaven, . . .
The gospel previews this for us.
Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” We can’t begin to
imagine the glory of heaven. Even cursed, the earth is beautiful,
but it does not compare to heaven.
The gospel gives us a vision of a non-cursed earth, even though
we still are under the curse to a degree. But Jesus also became a
curse for us in many ways (Gal 3:13).
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
Son.” We cannot begin to imagine love like this. Again, ‘if God
didn’t withhold his only Son from us, with him he will also freely
give us all things.’
We cannot fully embrace it in one lifetime. Any degree that we
can image pales in the light of spiritual, heavenly reality. But the
gospel is God’s gift to give us a good preview.
Mother Theresa said the one thing she would like to impart to
people is her abiding love and trust in God. She said it was the
most valuable thing she’d ever learned. This is what the gospel is
talking about: living life trusting Abba, and knowing his love.
