Shepherds College Soaring Eagles
by Sarah Kolkman, Instructor and Special Olympics Coach
Special Olympics gives continuing opportunities to develop
physical fitness, demonstrate teamwork, and the chance to share
gifts, skills, and friendship. We work hard to create an
environment in which success is more than coming in
first place. In addition to encouraging a healthy life style, Special
Olympics offers students opportunities to serve in meaningful
leadership roles and maximize their potential both on and off the
playing field.
We have been blessed to be able to provide year-round
athletic training and competition in a variety of sports for
our students. This is done through the dedication of faithful
volunteers who work hard to provide the best environment for
our athletes to succeed. If you or anyone you know is interested in
volunteering with Special Olympics, please contact Scott Perkins,
Special Olympics Coordinator, at 262-878-5620 ext. 6415.
Fall Sports
Bowling
Rolling in with our first offered sport, bowling gains popularity
because of its leisurely nature and competitive spirit. While athletes
are individually competing, they have the benefit of practicing
weekly as a team. Bowling allows players the advantages of physical
exercise as well as participation and social integration.
Volleyball
Starting a new school year can be overwhelming with all of the
new faces around you. Joining a team is a great way to get to
know others as well as benefit from the camaraderie of working Spring Sports
together. Volleyball offers athletes training in being able to
successfully serve and return a volleyball as well as develop
communication and teamwork skills. Basketball
As one of our most popular sports, basketball is a favorite among
our athletes. Special Olympics basketball teaches teamwork and
skills of the game. In the 2017-2018 athletic season, Shepherds
Soaring Eagles hosted five different basketball teams: Navy, Royal,
Orange, Green, and Purple. This allows students of all athletic
abilities a chance to play on a basketball team and experience
success.
Soccer
Springtime offers the opportunity for students to spend more
time outdoors, and what better way than to kick around a soccer
ball! Our soccer teams helps athletes improve their overall
physical fitness through training and competition. Players also
benefit through team building, communication, and friendship.
Track & Field
While most students are sprinting towards graduation, those on
the track and field team are sprinting towards their own goal.
Athletes can compete in running events from the 100M to the
3000M run or relays. Some athletes also compete in field events
such as the high jump, shot put, long jump and a softball throw.
