Our next step in the implementation of PBIS in Virgen del Carmen will be to co-teach our first PBIS lesson

to the students. In this lesson, we will introduce the new PBIS system to them and explain each of the

overarching expectations and the rules that apply under each of them in the classroom. During this lesson, we

also plan on modeling examples and non-examples of positive behavior in the classroom. For example, to

explain how to raise your hand and wait to be called on, one of us will play the role of a student and another

one of us will play the role of the teacher. In the “bad” example, the person being the student will shout out

and run up to the teacher, while the teacher will be ignoring the student. In the “good” example, the student

will be raising her hand silently and will be waiting to be called on. The teacher in this scenario will call on

the student because she is raising her hand silently. We plan on teaching this lesson to each grade in Virgen

del Carmen. The lesson should take 20-30 minutes and in addition to teaching positive behaviors, we will be

teaching the students about the reward systems that go along with PBIS. Our plan is to teach these lessons

during the week of October 15th. Here is a video format example on modeling examples and non-examples…

the “right way” would be an example, the “wrong way” would be a non-example -

After teaching the PBIS lesson to each class, we will need to monitor student behavior and monitor whether or

not the teachers are implementing what they learning during the professional development. If we see that

some rules need some reinforcing, we will re-teach a mini-lesson about those specific behaviors. Likewise, if

we see that a teacher is confused with a certain part of the PBIS system, we can help them better understand it

by giving more examples. In the final week of October, we plan on monitoring the implementation of this

system and addressing any issues that may come up in another professional development session. This second

session will most likely be less intensive and more like a meeting.

Two weeks into November, we will collect our final data. We plan on collecting this data the same way we

collected our initial data. After collecting our final data, we will compare our findings to our initial findings. If

the implementation of PBIS works out in Virgen del Carmen, then we hope to see a decrease in the averages

of “bad behavior” by the end of November. Likewise, we plan on creating a manual for the teachers at Virgen
