Verses  like  these  disqualify  multitudes  of



             professing  Christians  from  becoming



             disciples of Christ, and these kinds of verses


             ought to cause every professing Christian to



             “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the


             faith; prove your own selves . . .”





                    But what does Jesus mean when He says


             that  we  should  “hate”  our  father,  mother,



             wife, children, brothers and sisters in order to



             be His disciple?  Surely He didn’t mean that


             we should abhor them or feel malice toward



             them, because that would conflict with many



             other  passages  of  Scripture.  One  possible


             explanation is that our love for Christ should



             so outweigh our love for family that it will


             appear  hateful  and  unloving  toward  family



             when  we  choose  loyalty  to  Christ  at  the
