Greeting of Batak
Each Batak tribe has its own special greeting. Although the Batak tribe is famous for its
Horas greetings, there are still two more greetings that are less popular in the community, namely
Mejuah juah and Njuah juah. Horas himself still has a name for each based on the clan that uses it
1. Pakpak “Njuah-juah Mo Banta Karina!”
2. Karo “Stay away from us Krina!”
3. Toba “Horas Jala Gabe Ma Di Hita Saluhutna!”
4. Simalungun “Horas banta Haganupan, Greetings Habonaran Do Bona!”
5. Mandailing and Angkola “Horas Tondi Madingin Pir Ma Tondi Matogu, Sayur Matua Bulung!”
Batak Tribe Tradition
The Batak tribe has many traditions inherited from their ancestors. Batak cultural traditions
that have been preserved to this day include:
1. Wandering
Not only is it a habit of the Minangkabau people, the tradition of wandering is also carried
out by the Batak Tribe. Migrating is generally done by men who want to reach adulthood.
Men are required to leave their place of origin and learn to work and live independently in
a new place. Even in the past, they were not allowed to return home before success and amassing
a lot of treasure.
2. Sea Feast
As the name implies, this tradition is carried out by the sea. Usually held every October
every year. The meaning of sea feast is as an expression of gratitude for the harvest they have got
for 1 year. This feast is usually done by the Batak people in the Central Tapanuli area at night until
noon.
