Batak Traditional Clothing
Ulos is an important and inseparable part of the life of the Batak people. Ulos cloth has a
deep meaning for their lives. In the view of the Batak tribe, there are three basic elements in human
life, namely blood, breath, and heat. The first two elements are interpreted as gifts from God, while
the third element is not included in it. The heat of the sun does not last until the evening to cry
coldly in the mountains where the Batak tribe lived in ancient times.
According to the view of the Batak tribe, there are three sources that give heat to humans,
namely the sun, fire and Ulos. Among the Batak tribe, the term ulos is often heard, which means
to give ulos, which is a symbol of giving warmth and affection to the recipient of ulos. Ulos has
various meanings depending on the occasion in which it is used. The meaning of ulos is as a sign
of love from parents to their children, namely as a form of conveying the blessing of Hula-hula.
Ulos has also become a symbol of widowhood or widower status for the Toba Batak community
who were abandoned by their life partners.
