traits and abilities \ virtues that he does not have. Because of his :ןוֹג ְּכ ,תרֶֶחַא הרֵָבֲע ַּב ן ֵּכ אֵצ ָּמִי אלֶֹּשּׁ הַמ .הרָוֹתּ הרְָסָאֶשּׁ הַמ
conceited vanity this person will flatter evil people and support
their evil doings so that in turn they will elevate him and perceive תַשׁיִבְל וֹא ,גֵגוֹשׁ ְּב רוּסִּא תַליִכֲא ה ָּבִס הֶזיֵאֵמ וֹל ן ֵּמ ּדְַזִנ םִא
him as being prestigious.
הָשֲׂעַנ לֵּגרְֶהַה ברֵֹמ םִא י ִּכ ,תאֹז ןיֵאְו .אָנְוַּג יאַהְכוּ זֵנְטַעַשׁ
The text (our holy books) speaks at length about the enormity הֶז לָלְכִנ טַעְמִכְו .'הַל דוֹב ָּכ הֶז ןיֵאְו ,ויָניֵע ְּב לקַ רוּסִּאָה
of this despicable personality trait in many references. Even םָנוֹשְׁלִבוּ םֶהיִפ ְּב וּהוּתַּפְיַו" :)ו"ל ח"ע םי ִּלִה ְּת( בוּת ָּכֶשׁ ה ֶּמ ַּב
pride that is hidden within one’s heart is abhorrent to Hashem
Yitbarach, as the pasuk states (Mishle 16:5) “All those who have לָכ ְּב םירְִמוֹא וּנֵמְצַע ְּב וּנָאְו ."וֹמִּע ןוֹכָנ אלֹ ם ָּבִלְו ;וֹל וּבְּזַכְי
a haughty heart are abhorrent to Hashem.” “All” means the
pasuk is not merely addressing someone who has no Torah or ןיֵא וּנֵמְצַעְבוּ ,"'וֹגְו זֹעָו דוֹב ָּכ 'הַל וּבָה" :)'א ט"כ םי ִּלִה ְּת( םוֹי
good deeds, obviously this person is abhorred by Hashem, but .זֹעָו דוֹב ָּכ םיִנְתוֹנ וּנָא
rather even if this person does have a little Torah and good deeds,
even so he is despised by Hashem because of his conceit. When ,הָכָלֲהַה ירְֵפִס ךְוֹתִּמ ןָתוֹא דֹמְלִּיֶשׁ םִא י ִּכ ,הָצֵע םוּשׁ ןיֵאְו
this person honestly searches his heart he will realize that he has
not paid back to Hashem even one thousandth of the good and ,הָלֵזְּג תוֹכְלִה ,הָבֵנְּג תוֹכְלִה :תוֹכָלֲה רָאְשׁ דֵמוֹלֶּשׁ וֹמ ְּכ
the benefits that HaKadosh Baruch has done for him constantly
throughout his entire life. In our Shabbat prayers (in the tefilah .אָנְוַּג יאַהְכוּ ,הָפרְֵט תוֹכְלִה :וֹבּ אֵצוֹיַּכְו ,הָאָנוֹא תוֹכְלִה
of Nishmat Kol Chai) we acknowledge this concept as we recite םָדָא ןי ֵּב לֵלוֹכְו ,וֹרֵבֲחַל םָדָא ןי ֵּבֶשׁ תוֹרֵבֲעֵמ אוּה ירֲֵהֶשׁ
“Even if our mouths were filled with song \ praise…we have
not begun to adequately praise\ thank You, etc.,” especially if ,אָמְלָע ְּב רָסוּמ ירְֵפ ִּסִמ קרַ ,דֵמוֹל וֹניֵאֶשׁ ןַמְז לָכְו .םוֹק ָּמַל
one ponders carefully about the extensiveness of the sins he תֶמֱאֶבוּ .אָמְלָע ְּב ירִָסוּמ ןָיְנִע קרַ אוּהֶשׁ ,וֹשְׁפַנ ְּב ה ֶּמדְַמ
has committed throughout his life and that HaKadosh Baruch
Hu is patient with him and He has extended kindness to him רֵתוֹי הֶז לַע ריִהְזַהְלוּ תוֹוַּצְל אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה ה ָּברְִה אלֲֹה
disproportionate to his deeds. Chazal have taught this concept .הָבָחרְַה ְּב טַעְמ רֵאָבֲאֶשׁ וֹמ ְּכ ,הרָוֹתַּה יֵנְיְנִע רָאְשׁ לַעֵמ
(Gemara Chulin 89a) in commentary on the pasuk (Kohelet 6:7)
“The entire effort of man resides in his mouth (in controlling the ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה וֹל רַמָאֶשׁ ,):ו"ק ןירִדְֶהְנַס( ל"ַזֲח ַּב וּניִצָמ הֵנִּה
way he expresses himself).” All of man’s mitzvot and Torah are
insignificant compared to the content of the words that come out :]ויָאיִבְנ ידְֵי לַע וֹל ה ָּלִּג אָמָת ְּסִמ[ ,יִמוֹדֲאָה גֵאוֹדְל אוּה
of his mouth. When man thinks carefully about what Chazal
have said, he will realize that he obviously has nothing to be שׁרֵוֹדּ ה ָּתַא הָמ ,ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל ירֵ ְּפַסְמ תוֹיִּשׁרָָפְל ַעיִּג ַּתֶשׁ ְּכ
conceited \ prideful \ haughty about. Man should ponder the ר ֵּפַסְמַה לֶשׁ וֹשְׁנָע לדֶֹּג תֶא הֶארְ ִּת םָשׁ ,וֹטוּשְׁפוּ ?ןֶה ָּב
seriousness of this sin which is a Lav that is counted among the
613 mitzvot, as the pasuk states (Devarim 8:14) “and your heart ,םיִכָאְל ַּמַל יוּאנָשׂ אוּהֶשְׁו ,א ָּבַה םָלוֹעָבוּ הֶּזַה םָלוֹע ָּב
will become haughty and you will forget Hashem your Gd,” and ן ָּל ֻּכִמ רֵתוֹיְבוּ .ויָלָע ןי ּדִ ררֵוֹעְל ן ֵּכ םַּג ויָלָע םיִשׂ ְּפַח ְּמֶשׁ
Devarim 8:11) “Be careful lest you forget Hashem your Gd,” as
these commandments are listed by the Se’Mag. ,וֹשְׁפַנ תַבֲעוֹתּ ארָקְִּנֶשׁ דַע ,דֹאְמ ךְרַ ָּבְתִי 'הַל יוּאנָשׂ אוּהֶשׁ
