than to deal justly, to love kindness, and to walk modestly with םָדָאָה וֹתוֹאֵמ הָלְעַמְל םיִלוֹעֶשׁ ְּכ ,ןָבוּמ אָלי ֵּמִמוּ ."רָב ָּד דיִּגַי
your Gd.” From this, one can well understand that when one
does just the opposite, it will result in great sorrow to HaKadosh .ץוּחַל ל ֹּכַה הֶחדְִנ ,דַחַי ְּב הָאְמ ֻּטַה ירְֵבדְִו הָשּׁדֻ ּקְַה ירְֵב ּדִ

ידְֵי לַע םיִאָמְטִנ הָשּׁדֻ ּקְַה ירְֵב ּדִֶשׁ ,הֶּזִמ רֵתוֹי הָערָ שֵׁי םַגְו

ZT”L lists 31 mitzvot that relate directly to Shemirat HaLashon.)
This would be the case even if there was only one mitzvah that ןוּנִּא ּדְ ,ןיִנרֲָחַא ןיִני ּדִרְַּג ה ָּמ ַּכ ןָיְל ַּת אָשׁי ִּב אָחוּר יאַהֵמוּ
related to Shemirat HaLashon, one may not cause any harm or ר ַּב קי ִּפַא ּדְ ,אָפוּנִּט ה ָּלִמ וֹא אָשׁי ִּב ה ָּלִמ אָדָחֲאַל ןיִנָמְמ
sorrow to one’s fellow Jew and one would have to be careful not to
violate that mitzvah since doing so would be contrary to the Will ןוֹהיֵּיַחְל יַו ,ןוֹל יַו .ןיִשׁי ּדִקַ ןי ִּלִמ קי ִּפַא רַתָבְלוּ הֵּמוּפִּמ שָׁנ
of HaKadosh Baruch Hu. And all the more so now, that HaKadosh
Baruch Hu broadened the scope of these halachot by explaining ןי ֵּלִא ּדְ ןיִג ְּב ,יֵתָא ּדְ אָמְלָע ְּב ןוֹל יַו ,ןי ּדֵ אָמְלָע ְּב ןוֹל יַו .'וּכְו
each individual subject within this topic, and establishing many ר ַּב קי ִּפַא דַכְו ,אָבֲאָסְמ ה ָּלִמ אוּהַה ןיִלְטָנ ןיִבֲאָסְמ יֵחוּר
parshyot that address the imperative of Shemirat HaLashon, with
absolute certainty one must be respectful of the honor of Hashem י ֵּלִמ יֵבֲאָסְמ יֵחוּר ןי ֵּלִא יִמי ּדִקְַא ,אָשׁי ּדִקַ ןיִליִמ רַתָבְל שָׁנ
and not transgress any of His laws. הֵּל יֵכָז אָלְו ,אָשׁי ּדִקַ ה ָּלִמ אוּהַהְל יִבֲאָסְמוּ אָבֲאָסְמ אוּהַה
Based on what we explained below, a large segment of the Torah .וֹנוֹשְׁל ןא ָּכ דַע .אָשׁי ּדִקַ אָליֵח אָשְׁשׁ ָּת לוֹכָיְבִכְו ,שָׁנ ר ַּב
addresses these subjects and one who widens his lips (speaks ,םירִֵחֲא ןי ּדִ ירֵרְוֹעְמ ה ָּמ ַּכ םיִיוּל ְּת תאֹּזַה הָערָָה ַחוּרֵמוּ(
extensively) and trivializes his speech to say anything dictated
by his inclination (his Yetzer Hara), without any doubt over the םָדָאָהֶשׁ ,ףָּנֻטְמ רָבָד ְּב וֹא ערַ רָבָד ְּב זֹחֱאֶל םיִּנֻמְמ םֵהֶשׁ
course of his life he will have violated these laws many thousands .םיִשׁוֹדקְ םירִָב ּדְ וי ִּפִמ איִצוֹמ ךְ ָּכ רַחַאְו ,וי ִּפִמ איִצוֹמ
of times. (Emphatically) How so very much will his Nefesh be
anguished when, in the Coming Future, they (Heaven) will show םֶהָל יוֹאְו ,הֶּזַה םָלוֹע ָּב םֶהָל יוֹא .םֶהיֵּיַחְל יוֹא ,םֶהָל יוֹא
him that over the course of his life he routinely transgressed רוּבּ ּדִַה תֶא םיִחקְוֹל ה ֶּלֵאָה הָאְמ ֻּטַה תוֹחוּר י ִּכ ,א ָּבַה םָלוֹעָל
tens of parshyot of the Torah. Regarding this, the teachings
of Chazal (Gemara Chagigah 5b) are very well known in their ךְ ָּכ רַחַא איִצוֹמ םָדָאָה רֶשֲׁאַכְו ,וי ִּפִמ איִצוֹהֶשׁ הֶּזַה אֵמ ָּטַה
commentary on the pasuk (Amos 4:13) “They recall for man
all of his conversations,” even the most casual conversations ,וּלֵּאָה הָאְמ ֻּטַה תוֹחוּר תוֹמי ּדִקְַמ ,םיִשׁוֹדקְ םירִוּבּ ּדִ וי ִּפִמ
between husband and wife are played back to him on the day he שׁוֹד ּקַָה רוּבּ ּדִַה תֶא םיִא ְּמַטְמוּ אוּהַה הָאְמ ֻּטַה רוּבּ ּדִ תוֹחקְוֹלְו
is judged (nothing he ever spoke will be lost). And especially for
these profoundly serious sins (i.e., forbidden speech) they will שָׁלְחֶנ לוֹכָיְבִכְו ,הָשּׁדֻ ּקְַה רַבדְ ִּב ,וֹבּ הֶכוֹז םָדָאָה ןיֵאְו .אוּהַה
certainly rebuke him and display them before him, as the pasuk ץרֶֶשַּׁה הּ ָּב עַגָנ רֶשֲׁא ַּכ ,הָמוּרְת ּדִ אָיְמ ּדֻ אוּהְו .)שׁוֹד ּקַָה ַח ֹּכַה
states (Tehilim 50:20-21) “you sit and speak against your brother
and slander the son of your mother…I will rebuke you and lay it .תאֵמְטִנ -
out before your eyes.”
