(Devarim Rabbah 6:5), in perashat Ki Tehtzeh, in commenting רוֹדּ ל ָּכ :).'ה אָמוֹי יִמְלַשׁוּרְי( ל"ַזֲח רַמֲאַמ ל ֹּכַל ַעוּדָי הֵנִּה
on the pasuk (Kohelet 5:5) “Don’t tell that angel that it was all
a mistake and why should HaElokim be angry with your voice”: רוּאֵבוּ .ויָמָי ְּב ברֱַחֶנ וּלִּא ְּכ ,ויָמָי ְּב שׁ ָּדקְ ִּמַה תי ֵּב הָנְבִנ אלֶֹּשׁ
Do not say “I will go and speak Lashon Hara and no one will וּניִכָז וּלִּא ,ַעיִשׁוֹהֵמ 'ה דַי הרְָצקָ םִאַה ,תֶמֱאֶב ּדְ :םירִָב ּדְַה
know.” HaKadosh Baruch Hu responds to him and says – “Know
that I am sending an angel who will stand next to you and will וֹמְכוּ .ַחיִשׁ ָּמַה תַאיִבְל םוֹיְו םוֹי ל ָּכ לוּלָע ,וּניֵשֲׂעַמ ן ּקֵַתְל
write down everything you say about your friend.” (Quoted
up until this point). And at this man’s time of judgment, they דִו ָּד ן ֶּבֶשׁ םוֹי ְּב ריִזָנ יִנירֲֵה ,רֵמוֹאָה :).ג"מ( ןיִבוּרֵע ְּב וּרְמָאֶשׁ
will (display) play back to him everything he had ever spoken, ,םוֹי וֹתוֹא ְּב אוֹבָי ן ֶּפ ,ןִיַי תוֹתְּשִׁל םוֹיְו םוֹי ל ָּכ רוּסָא ,א ָּב
as Chazal have said in commenting on the pasuk (Amos 4:13)
“and they tell to man his conversations,” even the most casual .א"י הָכָלֲה תוּריִזְנ תוֹכְלִהֵמ 'ד קרֶֶפ ְּב ם" ַּבְמרַָה קַס ָּפ ןֵכְו
conversations between husband and wife will be told to man at ץקֵ תֵתָל םיִחיִּנַמ םָניֵאְו ,םיִמרְוֹגּ וּניֵתוֹנוֲֹעֶשׁ ,תֶמֱאָה א ָּלֶא
the time he is judged.
תוֹר ָּצַה ברֹ יֵנ ְּפִמ ןַמְּזַה ךְֵשְׁמֶה ְּבֶשׁ דַב ְּלִמ וּנְיַהְו .וּנֵתוּלָגְל
[ 20 ] Most importantly, for every single word of Lashon Hara
or Rechilut that he speaks, he will lose a bit of the Torah that he דוֹע ,תוֹנוֲֹעַו םיִאָטֲח ה ָּמ ַּכ דוֹע םיִפְסוֹתִּמ םיִלוּטְל ִּטַהְו
had earned. This concept is expressed by the Midrash Shocher ןוֲֹע אוּהְו ,וּנֵצרְַא בירֱִחֶהֶשׁ ןוֹשׁארִָה לוּקְל ּקִַה וּנ ּדְֵגֶנְל דֵמוֹע

Tov (in the 42 Mizmor) as follows: “Do not allow your mouth
to cause injury to your body,” which is addressing Lashon Hara. .וּנ ָּב ד ּקֵרְַמ אוּה ןִידֲַעַו ,םָּנִח תַאְנִשְׂו ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל
“Why should HaElokim become angry with you because of your
voice” (Kohelet 5:5), at the sound of your voice that came out ,רוּבִּח הֶזיֵא ר ַּבֻחְי רֶשֲׁא ַּכֶשׁ ,ירַוּעְנ יֵמי ִּב יִתיִיָה רוּבָסְו
of your mouth and spoke Lashon Hara against your friend. (The
text continues) “and destroy the efforts of your hand,” meaning רוּסִּא ןַיְנִעְל םיִכָּיַשַּׁה ,ויָתוֹכְלִהְו ויָטרְָפוּ ויָלָל ְּכ וֹבּ רַאֹביִו
that the small amount of Torah that you have achieved \ that
you have in your hand, and now you went (and spoke Lashon .הֶז ןָיְנִע ְּב ליִעוֹי ,ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל תַל ָּבקְַו תוּליִכרְוּ ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל
Hara against your friend) and destroyed it .” At its simplest רוּבִּחַה 'ה ךְוּרָבוּ ,וי ִּתְס ַּפדְִהְו ויִתיִשֲׂעַו ךְרַ ָּבְתִי 'ה יִנרַָזֲעַו
meaning, we can say that if someone were to bring a gift to the
king, the laws of honor dictate that the packaging containing the ל ָּכִמוּ ,"םיִּיַח ץֵפָח" ארָקְִנ וֹמְשׁוּ ,לֵארְָשִׂי יֵניֵע ְּב ןֵח אָצָמ
gift should be just as suitable as the gift. But if this person was .ה ֵּברְַה ירַָב ּדְ וּליִעוֹיֶּשׁ ,יִתיִכָז אלֹ דוֹע הֶשֲׂעַמְל ,םוֹקָמ
a fool and presented the king with a disgusting package, not only
will the king not look favorably on this person, but also he will וּנְיַה ּדְ ,הֶּזַה רָב ָּד ַּב הָצֵע ס ֵּכַטְל ירַי ִּכַמוּ יַעדְוֹי וּצֲעָי הֵּנִהְו
be angry with him. So too in our discussion. All of man’s actions
during the course of a day, what he did and what he said, all ,ל"ַזֲח ירְֵמַאַמ הֶזיֵא תַחַא הָלְבַט לַע רוּצּקִ ְּב קי ִּתְעַהְל
of that ascends On High, carried aloft by winged creatures. In לדֶֹּג ךְֶפֶהְלוּ ,וֹנוֹשְׁלוּ וי ִּפ רֵמוֹשַּׁה רַכְשׂ לדֶֹג ְּב םיִגיִלְפ ַּמַה
this regard, it is written (Kohelet 10:20) “and winged creatures
will speak that.” It is very obvious that if words of sanctity and )* םידִיִחְי ןי ֵּב םָתוֹא ץיִפָהְלוּ ,םָנוֹשְׁל ִּב םיִלקְְלקְַמַה שֶׁנֹע
