A Tefilah by the Chafetz Chayim ב קרפ

perpetrated by a sinner in his presence, as the perasha states in ר ֵּבדְַמ אוּהֶשׁ םָדָא ָתיִארָ םִא :וֹנוֹשְׁל הֶזְו ,"וּנֶּאוֹבְת הָערָ
Mas’eh (Bamidbar 35:33) “Do not flatter.”
Also protect me from speaking words of mockery, as the Navi תוֹערָ ויָלָע ןירִ ְּבדְַמ תרֵָשַּׁה יֵכֲאְלַמ ףַא ,וֹרֵבֲח לַע הָערָ
admonishes (Yeshaya 28:22) “and now do not ridicule, lest your 'ז םי ִּלִה ְּת( רַמָא ְּתַא ּדְ וֹמ ְּכ ,אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה יֵנְפִל ה ָּפֻנֲחַו
affliction becomes more severe.” Prevent me from sitting in the
company of scoffers, as (David HaMelech writes in) Tehilim אוּהֶשׁ םָדָא ָתיִארָ םִא ךְֶפֶהְלוּ ."וֹשׁארְֹב וֹלָמֲע בוּשָׁי" :)ז"י
(1:1) “and do not sit in the company of scoffers.” ויָלָע ןירִ ְּבדְַמ תרֵָשַּׁה יֵכֲאְלַמ ףַא ,וֹרֵבֲח לַע בוֹט ר ֵּבדְַמ

Give me the merit to be very careful not to use oppressive \ .םָשׁ ןֵּיַע .'וּכְו אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה יֵנְפִל בוֹט תוּכְז
abusive words, as the pasuk states (Vayikrah 25:17) “Do not
cause pain to your fellow Jew” and Chazal understand this אָנָשִּׁל הּ ֵּב תיִא ּדְ ןאַמ :ערָֹצְמ תַשׁרָ ָּפ שׁוֹד ּקַָה רַהֹּז ַּב אָתיִא .זי
to mean using words that aggrieve. And help me to be very
careful not to embarrass my fellow Jew, even at a time when I אָה ּדְ ,אוּה ךְירִ ְּב אָשׁדְקֻ ּדְ הּ ֵּמקַ תַלָע אָל אָתוֹלְצ ,אָשׁי ִּב
am rebuking him, as the pasuk states (Vayikrah 19:17) “rebuke
your fellow Jew but do not come to sin because of it.” Help me לי ִּבקְַו הָבוּשְׁת ִּב רדֲַהַא ּדְ ןָוי ֵּכ ,אָבֲאָסְמ ַחוּר הֵּלֲע רַעְתִא
to be very careful not to speak words of arrogance, as the pasuk וֹתרֳָהָט םוֹי ְּב" :)'ב ד"י ארָקְִּיַו( ?ביִת ְּכ הַמ ,הָבוּשׁ ְּת הֵּלֲע
states (Devarim 6:12) “you shall be careful not to forget G-d”
and Chazal have a tradition that this is a warning to those who וֹת ָּלִפ ְּת ,ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל וֹבּ שֵּׁיֶשׁ יִמ( "'וֹגְו ןֵה ֹּכַה לֶא אָבוּהְו
are arrogant. Regarding this, the pasuk states (Devarim 8:14) ויָלָע ררֵוֹעְתִנ ירֲֵהֶשׁ ,אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה יֵנְפִל תֶסֶנְכִנ הָּניֵא
“lest your heart becomes arrogant and you will forget…” as the
Gemara states (Sotah 5a) “Haughtiness is forbidden even when ,הָבוּשׁ ְּת ויָלָע ל ֵּבקְַמוּ הָבוּשְׁת ִּב רֵזוֹחֶשׁ ןָוי ֵּכ ,הָאֵמְט ַחוּר
it is confined to one’s heart.” (Further) regarding this, Mishle .)"ןֵה ֹּכַה לֶא אָבוּהְו וֹתרֳָהָט םוֹי ְּב" ?בוּת ָּכ הַמ
teaches (16:5) “all those who are haughty of heart are detestable
to Hashem.” אוֹבָל דיִתָעֶל :)'כ( תיִשׁארֵ ְּב תדַָּגַא שׁרַדְִמ ְּב אָתיִא .חי

So too protect me from speaking words of controversy, as the
pasuk states (Bamidbar 17:5) “and do not be like Korach and his וֹל ןיֵא ,שָׁחָּנֶשׁ םֵשְׁכוּ .א ֵּפרְַתִמ ןיֵא שָׁחָנְו ,ןיִא ְּפרְַתִמ ל ֹּכַה
supporters,” as the Gemara Sanhedrin states (110a) “This pasuk הָאוּפרְ וֹל ןיֵא ,וֹרֵבֲח לַע ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל רֵמוֹאָה ךְ ָּכ ,הָאוּפרְ
is a warning not to engage in any controversy.”
So too keep me away from anger, a profoundly serious sin, which אוֹל ְּב שָׁחָּנַה ךְֹשִּׁי םִא" :)א"י 'י תֶלֶהקֹ( רַמֱאֶּנֶשׁ ,אוֹבָל דיִתָעֶל
also leads to controversy and other forbidden words. Regarding ןוָֹעֶה םרֵוֹגּ םיִמָעְפִלְו ."ןוֹשׁ ָּלַה לַעַבְל ןוֹרְתִי ןיֵא )ךְ ָּכ( שַׁחָל
this Chazal have taught- Whoever is angry is as though he is הָתיִמ איִהֶשׁ ,הרָ ָּכְסַא תַתיִמ ְּב תוּמָל ,דֹאְמ רוּמָח אוּהֶשׁ ,הֶּזַה
worshipping false gods.
Please strengthen me not to speak unless it involves something תוֹאֵמ עַשׁ ְּת :).'ח תוֹכרָ ְּב( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָאֶשׁ וֹמ ְּכ .דֹאְמ הרָוּמֲח
that is necessary for the well being of my life or my soul and let .הרָ ָּכְסַא ן ָּלֻכ ְּבֶשׁ הָשׁקָ ,םָלוֹע ָּב וּארְְבִנ הָתיִמ יֵניִמ הָשׁלְֹשׁוּ
all of my actions and words be for the sake of Heaven.
