17 Mechilta. 18 Literally šÒþÐïÌiÔî means “he threw” (or “poured”). Here this is not so. 19 Onkelos’ translation differs
from Rashi’s explanation on two counts: 1. šÒþÐïÌiÔî does not mean: “he sprinkled,” but: “he poured.” 2. óÖ¼ÖíñÔ¼, according
to Rashi means literally: “on the people,” but according to Onkelos it means: “for the sake of the people.” 20 And
48 This seems to contradict what is written later on: öÖòÖ¼Óí î−ÖñÖ¼öÔ×ÖL−ÌkðѼBô ñÓíÒêñÓê êBëÖñíÓLô ñB×Ö−êGÐî—“ Moshe could not therefore did not punish them right then and there. 21 At which time: e³ŠôÖiÔîóÖ³Bê ñÔ×êÒzÔî’í−ÑòÐõÌlÌôLÑêêÑ®ÑzÔî—“ A fire
