               2. The earth was unformed and desolate, eí flÒëÖî·eí¶Ò³í'Ö³Ð−ÞÖí±Óþ †ÖêÖíÐî.ë        to divide between the day and the night, íÖñÐ−¢ÖlÔíö−¤Ñëe óB£iÔíö−'Ñañ−–ÌcÐëÔíÐñ
           and darkness covered the surface of the abyss. óB¢íг−¤ÑòÐt-ñÔ¼CÓL£ìÐî                  and they will serve for signs for seasons, ó− flÌðμB¤ôÐñe·³Ò³ÒêÐñe¥−ÖíÐî
                       The breath of Elohim hovered ³Óõ£ÓìÔþÐôó− flÌíGÍêÔìe¤þÐî                                   for days and for years. :ó−ÞÌòÖLÐîó−£ÌôÖ−Ðñe
                                                                                           15. They will be for lights in the canopy of heaven óÌ− flÔôÖMÔíÔ¼−¤ÌšÐþÌa·³ÒþBêÐôÌñe¥−ÖíÐî .î¬
                  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
               [the heavens and the earth,] for it is written,  ë−̳Ð×−ÑþÎíÓL                         AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
                         “The breath of Elohim hovered  ³ÓõÓìÔþÐôó−ÌíGÍêÔìeþÐî
                        above the surface of the water,”  ,óÌ−ÖnÔí−ÑòÐtñÔ¼                        To divide between the day and the night.  .äÈìÀéÈlÇä ïéÅáe íBiÇä ïéÅaìéÄcÀáÇäÀì
                       Scripture not yet having revealed  êÖþКÌnÔííÖlÌèêGö−Ì−ÔðμÔî                   After the first light was stored away. 52  ,öBLêÌþÖí þBêÖíïÔòÐèÌpÓMÌô
                when the creation of the water took place, 19  .íÖ³Ð−Öí−Ô³ÖôóÌ−ÔnÔí³Ôê−ÌþÐa             But during the seven days of creation  ³−ÌLêÑþÐë−ÑôÐ−³Ô¼ÐëÌLÐañÖëÎê
            thus teaching that the waters preceded the earth.  .±ÓþÖêÖñóÌ−ÔnÔíeôÐcÖwÓL,ÖzÐðÔôÖñêÖí  the original light and darkness served together  ðÔìÔ−ó−ÌòBLêÌþÖíCÓLìÔíÐî þBêÖíeLÐnÌL
                   And further [proof of the above is that]  ,ðB¼Ðî                                                 by day and by night.  :íÖñÐ−ÖlÔaö−Ñëe óBiÔaö−Ña
         since the heavens were created from fire and water, 20  .eêÖþÐëÌòóÌ−Ôôe LÑêÑôóÌ−ÔôÖMÔíÓL           And they will serve as signs.  .úÉúÉàÀìeéÈäÀå
                      you are therefore forced [to admit]  EÎìÐþÖkñÔ¼                               When there is an eclipse of the luminaries  ,ö−ÌšBñ ³BþBêÐnÔíÓLÐk
                   that Scripture did not [intend to] teach  êÖþКÌnÔíðÑn−ÌñêG                                it is a bad sign for the world,  ,óÖñB¼Öñ êeí ¼ÔþöÖô−̽
         anything of the earlier or later sequence [of creation].  :óelÐkó−ÌþÖìeêÐôÔíÐîó−ÌôÖðКenÔíþÓðѽ                  as it is said:  :þÔôÍêÓòÓL
                                 Elohim created. 21  .íéÄ äGÁààÈøÈa                              “Do not fear the signs from the heavens, etc.” 53  ’îèî ezÖìÑzñÔêóÌ−ÔôÖMÔí ³B³BêÑô
                     It is not written “Adonoy created!” 22  .’í êÖþÖaþÔôÍêÓòêGÐî                         I.e., when you do the will of God,  í"ÖaÖšÔí öB®ÐþóÓ×гBNμÔa
                     [This is] because at first He intended  íÖëÖLÎìÔôÐëíÖñÖ¼íÖlÌìÐzÔaÓL              you need not worry about retribution. 54  :³eòÖ¼ÐþetÔíöÌô èBêÐðÌñö−Ì ×−ÌþЮóÓzÔêö−Ñê
                   to create it with the attribute of justice,  ,ö−ÌcÔí³ÔcÌôÐa B³êÒþÐëÌñ                               For seasons. 55  .íéÄãÂòBîÀìe
                  but then saw that the world cannot exist  ,óÑiԚгÌôóÖñB¼Öíö−ÑêÓLíÖêÖþ                 [This is said] concerning the future.  ,ð−ּ̳ÓíóÑLñÔ¼
                 and gave priority to the attribute of mercy  ó−ÌôÎìÔþ³ÔcÌôó−ÌcКÌí         For Israel will be commanded concerning the holidays  ,³BðμBnÔíñÔ¼ ³BeԬЮÌíÐññÑêÖþÐNÌ−ó−Ìð−̳μÓM
                  and joined it with the attribute of justice.  .ö−ÌcÔí³ÔcÌôÐñdÖõÐzÌLÐî                which are reckoned by the new moon.  :íÖòÖëÐlÔíðÔñBôÐñó−ÌòÐôÌòóÑíÐî
                   This [thought] is conveyed in the verse,  ,ë−̳Ð×Ìð eò−Ð−ÔíÐî                                           For days.  .íéÄîÈéÀìe
      “OnthedaywhenAdonoyElohimmadeearthandheaven.” 23  :óÌ−ÖôÖLÐî±ÓþÓêó−ÌíGÍê ’í ³BNμ óB−Ða                 The sun serving half the day  óB− −Ì®ÎìíÖnÔìÔí LenÌL
                        [2] Unformed and desolate.  .eäÉáÈåeäÉú [á]                                    and the moon serving [the other] half,  ,B−ЮÓìíÖòÖëÐlÔí LeôÌLÐî
                   eíÕz signifies wonder and astonishment.  ,öBôÖnÌLÐîíÖôÑz öBLÐleíÒz                           make up a complete day.  :óÑñÖL óB− −ÑþÎí
      I.e., a person would be awed and astonished by its emptiness.  :dÖaÓLeíÒañÔ¼óÑôBzÐLÌôe íÓíBz óÖðÖêÓL             And for years.  .íéÄðÈLÀå
                          eíÕ³ in Old French is estordison.  :ïÔ¼ÔñÐa ö"îL−ðþî¬Lê .eíÒ³               After 365 days they complete their cycle  óÖzÐ×ÔñÎíÔôeþÐôÐèÌ−ó−ÌôÖ− í"½¾ ¹B½Ðñ
                                       Desolate.  .eäÉá                                           in the twelve constellations that attend them,  óÖ³Bê ó−̳ÐþÖLÐôÔí ³BñÖfÔô ë"−Ða
                   eíÕë means desolation and empty space.  :eðЮe ³eš−Ñþ öBLÐñ                                    which makes one year,  íÖòÖLê−ÌíÐî
                           The surface of the abyss.  .íBäÀúéÅðÀtìÇò                                         (alt. version, i.e., 3651 days).  (óB− Ô ¼−ÌëÐþe ó−ÌôÖ− í"½¾ êeíÐî ê"½)
              I.e., upon the waters that are upon the earth. 24  :±ÓþÖêÖíñÔ¼ÓLóÌ−ÔnÔí−ÑòÐtñÔ¼          Whereupon they begin the next cycle  íÖiÌòÐLóÔ¼Ôt ó−Ìñ−ÌìгÔôe ó−ÌþÐïBìÐî
                     The breath of Elohim hovered. 25  .úÆôÆçÇøÀîíéÄäGÁàÇçeøÀå                         revolving in the same cycle as the first.  :öBLêÌþÖíöÖ×ÖñÎíÔôÐkñÔbÐñÔbÔaëÑaÔ½Ðñ
                [This refers to the] Throne of Glory [which]  ðBëÖkÔíêÑqÌk                                  [15] They will be for lights.  .úÉøBàÀîÄìeéÈäÀå [åè]
                                                                                               They [i.e., the luminaries] serve another purpose,  eLÐnÔLÐ−³êÒï ðB¼
      19  I.e., if Scripture intended to convey the order of creation, then before mentioning the waters, it should have  that they provide light for the world.  :óÖñB¼Öñ eþ−ÌêÖiÓL

      usually means wind. Here the meaning is different.                                 55  The difficulty here is that there were no holidays until after the exodus from Egypt.
