 14. Elohim said, ó−†ÌíGÍêþÓôê¤ÒiÔî .ð−  and the darkness He called night. íÖñÐ−¢ÖñêÖþ¤ÖšCÓL£ ìÔñÐî
 “Let there be lights in the canopy of heaven óÌ− flÔ ôÖMÔíÔ¼−¤ÌšÐþÌa·³ÒþÒêÐô−¥ÌíÐ−  It became evening and it became morning, þÓš£Òë-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔîëÓþ'Ó¼-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔî

 [nevertheless,] they heard  e¼ÐôÖL
                               was standing in space,  þ−ÌeÔêÖaðÑôB¼
 that the trees were thus commanded  ,CÔkñÔ¼ ³BòÖñ−ÌêÖíeeԬЮÌpÓL
                   hovering over the surface of the waters  óÌ−ÔnÔí−ÑòÐtñÔ¼¹ÑìÔþÐôe
 and applied a þÓôBìÖîñÔš [a fortiori] to themselves 47  ,öÖôЮԼÐaþÓôBìÖîñÔšeêÐNÖò
          by means of the breath of God and His commands, 26  ,BþÖôÎêÔôÐëe í"ÖaÖwÔíñÓL î−ÌtÔìeþÐa
 as is explained in an Aggadah in tractate Chulin. 48  :ö−Ìleì ³Ô¬−ÌìÐLÌaíÖðÖbÔêÐaLÖþBõÐôÌk
                          as a dove hovers over its nest.  .öÑwÔíñÔ¼³ÓõÓìÔþÐôÔííÖòB−Ðk

 They [the luminaries] were created from the first day  eêÖþÐëÌò öBLêÌþ óBiÌô
                                  [4] Elohim saw  íéÄäGÁààÀøÇiÇå [ã]
 and on the fourth [day] He commanded them  óÓí−ÑñμíÖeÌ®−̼−ÌëÐþÖëe
                  that the light was good and divided.  .ìÅcÀáÇiÇå áBè éÄk øBàÈäúÆà
 to be suspended in the canopy.  ,Ô¼−ÌšÖþÖa ³BñÖzÌíÐl
          Here, too, the Aggadaic explanation 27  is necessary. 28  .íÖðÖbÔê−ÑþÐëÌðÐñö−Ì×−ÌþЮeòÖêíÓïÖa¹Ôê
 Similarly, all products of heaven and earth  ±ÓþÖêÖîóÌ−ÔôÖL ³BðÐñBz ñÖköÑ×Ðî
                          He saw that it was not fitting  −êÔðÐ× Bò−ÑêÓLeíÖêÖþ
 were created on the first day  ,öBLêÌþ óBiÌôeêÐþÐëÌò
             that the wicked should have the use of it [light],  ó−̼ÖLÐþBaLÑnÔzÐLÌíÐñ
 and each one was firmly fixed [in its place]  ¼ÔaКÌòðÖìÓêÐîðÖìÓêñÖ×Ðî
                He, [therefore,] set it apart for the righteous  ó−Ìš−ÌcÔvÔñ Bñ−ÌcÐëÌíÐî
 on the day that it was commanded.  ,î−ÖñÖ¼þÔïÐèÌpÓL óBiÔa
                              in the World-to-Come.  .êÒëÖñð−ּ̳Óñ
 This is the intent of the scripture:  :ëe³ÖkÓL êeí
         According to its simple meaning, explain it as follows.  .eíÑLÐþÖtCÔk B¬eLÐõ−ÌõÐñe
 “[that which was created] with the heavens”— 49  ,óÌ−ÔôÖMÔí³Ñê
                              He saw that it was good  ,ëB¬ −ÌkeíÖêÖþ
 to include their products  ,óÓí−ѳBðÐñBz ³BaÔþÐñ
      and it is therefore improper that it [the light] and darkness  CÓLÒìÔñÐîBñíÓêÖòö−ÑêÐî
 “[and that which was created] with the earth”— 49  ,±ÓþÖêÖí³ÑêÐî
                   should function together in confusion.  ,êÖ−ÐëeaÐþ̼Ðaó−ÌLÐnÔzÐLÌôe−ÐíÌiÓL
 to include its products.  :Öí−Ó³BðÐñBz ³BaÔþÐñ
            So He established that one be bounded by the day  ,óBiÔë BôeìÐzíÓïÖñ¼ÔëÖšÐî
 Let there be lights.  .úÉøÉàÀîéÄäÀé  and the other be bounded by the night.  :íÖñÐ−ÖlÔ ë îôeìÐzíÓïÖñÐî
 The letter vav is omitted [in the word ³ÕþÕêÐô] 50  ,ë−̳Ðk î"−ÖîþѽÖì
                                    [5] One day.  .ãÈçÆà íBé [ä]
 because it [the fourth day] is a cursed day  íÖþÑ êÐô óB− êeíÓLñÔ¼
             For the language of this parshah to be consistent  íÖLÖþÖtÔí öBLÐñþÓðѽ−ÌõÐñ
 when children are susceptible to disease.  :³BšBò−̳ÐaíÖþÖkнÔê ñBtÌñ
                      it should have said “the first day,” 29  öBLêÌþ óB− ëBzÐ×ÌñBñíÖ−Öí
 This is what is referred to,  :eò−ÌòÖMÓL êeí
                   as is written concerning the other days,  :ó−ÌôÖiÔíþÖêÐLÌa ëe³ÖkÓLBôÐk
 “On the fourth day they fasted  ó−ÌpԼгÌôe−Öí−̼−ÌëÐþÖa
                              “second, third, fourth.”  .−̼−ÌëÐþ,−ÌL−ÌñÐL,−ÌòÑL
 so that disease not befall children.” 51  :³BšBò−̳Ða ñBt̳êHÓLíÖþÖkнÔêñÔ¼
                    Why, then, is it written [here] “one”?  ?ðÖìÓêëÔ³Ö×íÖnÖñ
                           This is because [on this day]  −ÌõÐl
 46  Unlike the trees where God said îò−ôñ −þõ í¾¼ (v. 11)—producing fruit of its kind.  47  I.e., if trees who naturally
 grow apart due to their largeness and are easily distinguishable, grow óí−ò−ôñ, to their kind, then, surely we who are
