         “Let the waters beneath the heavens be gathered ·óÌ− ¶ÔôÖMÔí³Ôì¥ÔzÌôóÌ−‚ÔnÔíe¶îÖwÌ−             which were beneath the canopy, Ô¼− flÌšÖþÞÖñ³Ôì¤ÔzÌô·þÓLÎê
             into one place, and let the dryness be seen.” í¢ÖLÖaÔiÔíí£ÓêÖþÞѳÐîð flÖìÓêóB¤šÖô-ñÓê  from the waters which were above the canopy, Ô¼−¢ÌšÖþÞÖññ¤Ô¼Ñôþ£ÓLÎêóÌ− flÔnÔíö−¤Ñëe
                                       It was so. :öÞÑ×-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔî                                                       and it was so. :öÞÑ×-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔî
                 10. Elohim called the dryness, “earth”, ±Óþ flÓê·íÖLÖaÔiÔñ|ó−¥ÌíGÍêê¶ÖþКÌiÔî.−       8. Elohim called the canopy heaven. óÌ−¢ÖôÖLÔ¼−£ÌšÖþÞÖñó−§ÌíGÍêê«ÖþКÌiÔî.ì
         and the gathering of the waters, He called “seas”, ó−¢ÌnÔ−ê¤ÖþÖšóÌ−£ÔnÔíí'ÑîКÌôÐñe     It became evening and it became morning þÓš£Òë-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔîëÓþ'Ó¼-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔî
                     and Elohim saw that it was good. :ëB Þ¬-−Ìkó−£Ì íGÍêêÐþ'ÔiÔî                                     the second day. ô :−ÞÌòÑLóB'−
             11. Elohim said, “Let the earth sprout grass, êÓL†Óc·±Óþ¶ÖêÖíê¥ÑLÐðÔzó−†ÌíGÍêþÓôê¤ÒiÔî .ê−               9. Elohim said, ó−†ÌíGÍêþÓôê¤ÒiÔî.¬


                  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
                    [9] Let the waters be gathered. 39  .íÄéÇnÇäeåÈwÄé [è]                               and [that is considered] its creation.  .B³−ÖiÌNμê−ÌíÐî
                   They [the waters] were [at first] spread  ö−Ììe¬ÐLe−ÖíÓL                                  [This is] similar [to the verse,]  ,BôÐk
                        over the face of the entire earth  ±ÓþÖêÖíñÖ×−ÑòÐtñÔ¼                            “And she made [fixed] her nails.” 35  :Öí−ÓòÐþÖtÌ®³ÓêíÖ³ÐNÖ¼Ðî
                    and He gathered them into the Ocean  ,½eòÖ−КeêÐaóîÖîКÌíÐî                              [From] above the canopy. 36  .ÇòéÄ÷ÈøÈììÇòÅî
                         which is the greatest of all seas.  :ó−ÌnÔiÔíñÖ×ÐëÓL ñBðÖbÔíóÖiÔí êeí     [The verse] does not state above the canopy,  þÔôÍêÓòêG Ô¼−ÌšÖþÖíñÔ¼
                               [10] He called seas.  .íéÄnÇéàÈøÈ÷ [é]                                      but rather from above the canopy.  .Ô¼−ÌšÖþÖññÔ¼ÑôêÖlÓê
                            Is there not but one sea? 40  ?êeí ðÖìÓêóÖ−êGÎíÔî            [This is] because they [the waters] are suspended in space.  .þ−ÌeÔêÖaö−Ì−eñÐzöÑíÓL−ÌõÐñ
                 But [the reason for the use of the plural is]  êÖlÓê                                   And why does it [the verse] not state  þÔôÍêÓòêGíÖô−ÑòÐtÌôe
                   [because] there is a difference between  íÓôBð Bò−Ñê                     “That it was good” [in reference to] the second day?” 37  ?−ÌòÑL óB−Ða ëB¬ −Ìk
                                   the taste of a fish  èÖcóÔ¼Ô¬                          Because the work involving the water was not completed  óÌ−ÔnÔí³Ó×êÓñÐôþÖôÐèÌòíÖ−ÖíêHÓL−ÌõÐñ
                      that comes up from the sea at Acco  BkÔ¼ÐaóÖiÔíöÌôíÓñB¼Öí                                    until the third day, 38  ,−ÌL−ÌñÐL óB− ðÔ¼
                                and the taste of a fish  èÖcóÔ¼Ô¬Ðñ                                although it was begun on the second [day];  ,−ÌòÑMÔadÖañ−ÌìгÌí−ÑþÎíÔî
                    that comes up from the sea at Spain. 41  :êÖiÌôÔtнÔêÐaóÖiÔíöÌôíÓñB¼Öí  and anything incomplete is not considered perfect or best.  .Bëe¬Ðî BêelÌôÐ a Bò−ÑêþÔôÐèÌòêHÓLþÖëÖðÐî
               [11] Let the earth sprout grass, herbs. 42  .áÆNÅòàÆLÆcõÆøÈàÈäàÅLÀãÇz [àé]                     [Whereas,] on the third day,  −ÌL−ÌñÐMÔëe
                       êÓLÓð is not synonymous with ëÓNѼ,  ëÓNѼ öBLÐñêÓLÓcêG               when the work involving the waters was completed,  óÌ−ÔnÔí³Ó×êÓñÐôíÖþÐôÐèÌòÓL
                       nor is ëÓNѼ synonymous with êÓLÓc.  ,êÓLÓc öBLÐñëÓNѼêGÐî              and He began another work which He completed,  ,dÖþÖôÐèe ³ÓþÓìÔêíÖ×êÖñÐôñ−ÌìгÌíÐî
                    And according to Scriptural grammar  êÖþКÌnÔí öBLÐñíÖ−ÖíêGÐî              [the phrase] “That it was good” is repeated twice.  ,ó−ÌôÖ¼Ðõ−ÑzÐL ëB¬ −ÌkBañÔõÖk
                    it would be incorrect to say ±ÓþÖêÖíë−ÌNμԳ  ,±ÓþÖêÖíë−ÌNμԳþÔôBñ          One for the completion of the work of day two,  −ÌòÑMÔí³Ó×êÓñÐôþÔôÐèÌñ³ÔìÔê
                  because there are various species of êÓLÓc,  ,ö−ÌšÖñeìÐôö−ÌêÖLÐð−Ñò−ÌnÓL  and one for the completion of the work of that [third] day.  :óBiÔí³Ó×êÓñÐôþÔôÐèÌñ³ÔìÔêÐî
                              each individual [specie]  BôЮԼÐñðÖìÓêñÖk                            [8] Elohim called the canopy heaven.  .íÄéÈîÈLÇòéÄ÷ÈøÈìíéÄäGÁààÈøÀ÷ÄiÇå [ç]
                  being referred to as “that particular ëÓNѼ.”  ,−ÌòBñÐtëÓNѼêÖþКÌò              [The word óÌ−ÔôÖL is a contraction of] óÌ−ÔôêÖN—  ,óÌ−Ôô-êÖN
                             And it would be incorrect  öBLÖñö−ÑêÐî                                           [meaning carrying of water,]
                               for the speaker to say:  :þÔôBñ þÑaÔðÐôÔñ                                      [also] óÌ−ÔôóÖL—there is water,  ,óÌ−Ôô-óÖL
                                “that particular êÓLÓc,”  ,−ÌòBñÐtêÓLÓc                                      [also] óÌ−Ôôe LÑê—fire and water.  ,óÌ−Ôôe LÑê
                                because the term êÓLÓc  êÓLÓc öBLÐlÓL                                    He blended them with one another  íÓïÖaíÓïöÖëÐþѼÓL
             refers to the [overall plant] covering of the earth  ±ÓþÖêÖí³ÔL−ÌëÐñ êeí                     and made the heavens from them.  :óÌ−ÖôÖLóÓíÑôíÖNÖ¼Ðî
                                                                                         35  Devarim 21, 12.  36  If the verse is only intended to convey “above the canopy,” it would have sufficed to say ñÔ¼
      39  From where were they gathered?  40  Since all the waters actually form one great sea, why are they called seas,  Ô ¼−ÌšÖþÖí. ñÔ¼Ñô implies suspended above.  37  Regarding the creations of each day, except for the second day, the Torah
      in the plural?  41  Since the nature of the sea differs from locality to locality it can be referred to as “seas.”  42  The  states, “God saw that it was good.”  38  For it was on the third day that the bodies of water were separated from the
