 BEREISHIS úéùàøá     and let birds fly above the earth, ±Óþ flÖêÖí-ñÔ¼¹¤ÑõB¼Ð−·¹B¼Ðî
 1 1. In the beginning Elohim created ó−¢ÌíGÍêê¤ÖþÖa³−£ÌLêÑþ´Àa .ê à  in the open canopy of the heaven.” :óÌ−ÞÖôÖMÔíÔ¼−'ÌšÐþ−£ÑòÐt-ñÔ¼
           21. And thus Elohim created the great whales, ó−¢ÌñÒðÐbÔíó£Ìò−ÌpÔzÔí-³Óêó− flÌíGÍêê¤ÖþÐëÌiÔî .ê×

 R. Yitzchok said:  :šÖìЮÌ−−ÌaÔþþÔôÖê  and every winged bird of its kind; eíflÑò−ÌôÐñ·¹ÖòÖk¹B¥¼-ñÖk³¶ÑêÐî
 The Torah should have begun with [the verse]  êÖlÓêíÖþBzÔí³Óêñ−ÌìгÔíÐñC−ÌþÖ®íÖ−ÖíêG  and Elohim saw that it was good. :ëB Þ¬-−Ìkó−£ÌíGÍêêÐþ'ÔiÔî
 “This month shall be [your first month],” 1  ,óÓ×ÖñíÓfÔíLÓðÒìÔíÑô  22. Elohim blessed them saying, þ¢ÒôêÑñó−£ÌíGÍêó§Ö³ÒêCÓþ«ÖëÐ−Ôî .ë×
 it being the first precept  íÖòBLêÌþíÖîЮÌôê−ÌíÓL
 that the Israelites were commanded.  2  .ñÑêÖþÐNÌ−dÖëeeԬЮÌpÓL  “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the waters of the seas, ó− flÌnÔiÔa·óÌ−Ô¶nÔí-³Óêe¥êÐñÌôe e†ëÐþe e¤þÐt
 Then why does it [the Torah] begin  ìÔ³ÖtóÔ¼ÔhíÔôe

 with “In the beginning”?  ?³−ÌLêÑþÐëÌa
 This is because [of the concept contained in the verse,]  :óeMÌô  is called ±ÓþÓL;  :±ÓþÓL −eþÖš
 “He declared the power of His works to His people  BnÔ¼Ðñð−ÌbÌíî−ÖNμÔôÔìÒk  among winged creatures: e.g., flies,  ;ó−ÌëeëÐï öBèÐk ,¹B¼Öa
 in order to give to them the inheritance of nations.” 3  .óÌ−Bb ³ÔñÎìÔòóÓíÖñ³Ñ³Öñ  among crawling creatures: e.g., ants, beetles and worms,  ,ó−̼ÖñB³Ðîó−ÌLet−ÌìÐî ó−ÌñÖôÐò öBèÐk ,ó−̮֚ÐLÌa
 Thus, should the nations of the world say to Israel,  ñÑêÖþÐNÌ−ÐñóÖñB¼Öí ³Bneê eþÐôêÒ−óÌêÓL  among [larger] creatures:  ,³BiÌþÐëÌëe
 “You are robbers, for you have taken by force  óÓzÐLÔëÐ kÓL,óÓzÔêó−̬нÌñ  e.g., rat, mouse, lizard and the like,  ,óÓíÖëêÑ®BiÔ×Ðî¬ÓôBìÐîþÖaÐ×Ô¼ÐîðÓñBì öBèÐk
 the lands of the Seven Nations,” 4  ,óÌ−Bè íÖ¼ÐëÌL ³B®ÐþÔê  and so, too, [among] the fish.  :ó−ÌèÖcÔíöÑ×Ðî
 they [Israel] will say to them:  :óÓíÖñó−ÌþÐôBê óÑí  [21] Whales.  .íéÄðéÄpÇzÇä [àë]
 “All the earth belongs to God.  ,ê−Ìíí"ÖaÖwÔíñÓL±ÓþÖêÖíñÖk  I.e., the great fish of the sea.  .óÖiÔaÓL ó−ÌñBðÐbó−ÌèÖc
 He created it and gave it to whomever He saw fit.  .î−Öò−ѼÐaþÖLÖ−þÓLÎêÔñdÖòÖ³Ðòe dÖêÖþÐa êeí  According to the Aggadah 60  íÖðÖbÔê−ÑþÐëÌðÐëe
 It was His will to give it to them  óÓíÖñdÖòÖ³Ðp BòB®ÐþÌa  this refers to the Leviasan and its mate  ,Bèeï öÓëe öÖ³Ö−ÐîÌñ êeí
 and it was His will to take it from them  óÓíÑôdÖñÖ¬Ðò BòB®ÐþÌëe  which He created, male and female;  ,íÖëÑšÐòe þÖ×ÖïóÖêÖþÐaÓL
 and give it to us.”  :eòÖñdÖòÖ³Ðòe  whereupon He killed the female  íÖëÑšÐpÔí³ÓêèÔþÖíÐî
 In the beginning [Elohim] created.  .àÈøÈaúéÄLàÅøÀa  and preserved it for the righteous in the World-to-Come.  ,êÒëÖñð−ּ̳Óñó−Ìš−ÌcÔvÔñdÖìÖñÐôe
 This verse insists that it be expounded  −ÌòÑLÐþÖcêÖlÓêþÑôBê íÓfÔíêÖþКÌnÔíö−Ñê  For if they were permitted to propagate  eaÐþÌ−Ðî eþÐõÌ−óÌêÓL
 as was done by our Rabbis. 56  :eò−ѳBaÔþ eíeLÖþÐcÓLBôÐk  the world could not exist in their presence.  :óÓí−ÑòÐõÌaóÖñB¼Öíó−ÑiԚгÌ−êG
 [The world was created] for the sake of the Torah  íÖþBzÔíñ−ÌëÐLÌa  Living creature.  .äÈiÇçÇäLÆôÆð
 which is called “The beginning of His way,” 7  ,BkÐ þÔð³−ÌLêÑþ³êÑþКÌpÓL  A living soul.  :³eiÔìdÖa¾ÑiÓL
 and for the sake of Israel who are called  eêÐþКÌpÓLñÑêÖþÐNÌ−ñ−ÌëÐLÌëe  61
                              [22] Blessed them.  .íÈúÉàCÆøÈáÀéÇå [áë]
 “The beginning of His grain crop.” 89  .íÒ³ÖêeëÐz³−ÌLêÑþ
                  Because they are [constantly] decimated,  óÖ³Bê ó−ÌþÐqÔìÐnÓL−ÌõÐñ
 But if you insist on the simple interpretation,  ,B¬eLÐõÌkBLÐþÖõÐñÖ³êÖaóÌêÐî  captured and eaten  ,óÖ³Bê ö−ÌñÐ×BêÐîóÓíÑôö−ÌðÖ®Ðî
 interpret it thus.  :eíÑLÐþÖtCÔk  they required a blessing. 62  .íÖ×ÖþÐëÌñe×ÐþЮeí
 At the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth,  ,±ÓþÖêÖîóÌ−ÔôÖL³Ôê−ÌþÐa³−ÌLêÑþÐa
                    The animals also needed to be blessed,  ,íÖ×ÖþÐëÌñe×ÐþЮeí ³BiÔìÔí¹ÔêÐî
 when the world was unformed and desolate,  CÓLÒìÐîeíÒëÖîeíÒ³íÖ³Ð−Öí±ÓþÖêÖíÐî
              but since the serpent was destined to be cursed  ,íÖñÖñКÌñð−ּ̳ÓLLÖìÖpÔí−ÑòÐtÌôêÖlÓê
 God said, “Let there be light.”  .þBê −ÌíÐ−ó−ÌíGÍêþÓôêÒiÔî
                       they were, therefore, not blessed  öÖ×ÐþÑëêGCÔ×Ðñ
       so that he [the serpent] not be included in their blessing.  :ñÖñÐ×Ìa êeí êÑíÐ−êHÓL
