 6. Elohim said, “Let there be a canopy Ô¼−£ÌšÖþ−'ÌíÐ−ó− flÌíGÍêþÓôê¤ÒiÔî.î  seed-yielding herbs, ¼ÔþflÓïÔ¼−¤ÌþÐïÔôëÓNѼƒ
 in the midst of the waters, óÌ−¢ÖnÔíCB¤³Ða  fruit trees bearing fruit of its own kind, Bflò−ÌôÐñ·−ÌþÐtíÓN¥Ò¼−„ÌþÐt±¤Ñ¼
 and let it divide between waters and waters.” :óÌ−ÞÖôÖñóÌ−£Ôôö−'Ñañ− flÌcÐëÔô−¤Ìí−Ìî  with its seed within it, upon the earth.” ±Óþ¢ÖêÖí-ñÔ¼B£ë-B¼ÐþÔïþ'ÓLÎê
 7. Elohim made the canopy, ›Ô¼−›ÌšÖþÞÖí-³Óê ‡ó−ÌíGÍêNÔ¼¤ÔiÔî.ï  And it was so. :öÞÑ×-−ÌíÐ−ÞÔî
 and divided the waters ·óÌ− ¶ÔnÔíö−¥Ñañ†ÑcÐëÔiÔî  12. The earth brought forth grass, êÓLÓc…±Óþ‚ÖêÖíê¶Ñ®BzÔî .ë−

 God was alone in His world  ,BôÖñB¼Ðað−ÌìÖ−í"ÖaÖwÔííÖ−ÖíÓL
                         when it is full of plant growth.  :ó−ÌêÖLÐðÌa ³êÑlÔôгÌôê−ÌíÓLÐk
 for the angels were not created until the second day. 30  .−ÌòÑL óB− ðÔ¼ó−Ì×ÖêÐñÔnÔíeêÐþÐëÌòêHÓL
                                      [Therefore:]
 This is the explanation in Bereishis Rabbah.  :þ"ëë LÖþBõÐôCÔk
             Let the earth sprout [would be defined thus:]  .õÆøÈàÈäàÅLÀãÇz
 [6] Let there be a canopy. 31  .ÇòéÄ÷ÈøéÄäÀé [å]  Let it [the earth] be full and covered  íÓqÔkг̳ÐîêÑlÔôгÌz
 [The meaning is] let the expanse be solidified.  .Ô¼−ÌšÖþÖíšÔïÍìÓ−
                     with a covering of individual plants.  .ó−ÌëÖLμ LeëÐl
 Even though the heavens were created on the first day,  ,öBLêÌþÖí óB−ÔaóÌ−ÔôÖLeêÐþÐëÌpÓL−ÌtñÔ¼¹ÔêÓL
                       In Old French êÓLÓc is referred to as  êÓLÓðêÖþКÌòïÔ¼Ôñ öBLÐñÌa
 they were, nevertheless, still fluid  e−Öíö−ÌìÔñö−Ì−Ôðμ
                                 erbediz [plant-life],  ,±"−þëþê
 and were solidified on the second day  −ÌòÑMÔëeLÐþÖšÐî
                     [i.e.,] all intermingled [collectively],  ,êÖ−ÐëeaÐþ̼ÐaöÖñek
 by the roaring command of God,  í"ÖaÖwÔí³ÔþμÔbÌô  whereas each individual root is called ëÓNѼ.  :ëÓNѼêÖþКÌòBôЮԼÐñLÓþBL ñÖ×Ðî
 when He said, “Let there be a canopy!”  .Ô¼−ÌšÖþ−ÌíÐ−BþÐôÖêÐa  43
 This is the intent of the verse,  ,ëÔ³ÖkÓLeíÓïÐî  Seed-yielding.  .òÇøÆæÇòéÄøÀæÇî
                 [Meaning:] that its seed is grown within it  B¼ÐþÔïBañÔðÐèÌiÓL
 “The pillars of the heavens shuddered”  ,eõÖõBþÐ−óÌ−ÔôÖL−ÑðenÔ¼
                      so that it can be resown elsewhere.  :þÑìÔê óBšÖôÐëepÓnÌôÔ¼BþÐïÌñ
 the entire first day, and on the second  ,−ÌòÑMÔëe ,öBLêÌþ óB− ñÖk
 “They were astonished by His roaring command.” 32  ,B³ÖþμÔbÌôeíÐôгÌ−  Fruit trees. 44  .éÄøÀtõÅò
 [This is analogous] to a person  óÖðÖêÐk  This implies that the taste of the tree should be  ±Ñ¼ÖíóÔ¼Ô¬êÑíÐiÓL
 who is startled and bolts upright  ðÑôB¼ÐîóÑôBzÐLÌnÓL  the same as the taste of the fruit. 45  .−Ì þÐtÔíóÔ¼Ô¬Ðk
 from the sudden roar of one who terrifies him.  :î−ÖñÖ¼ó−ÑiÔêÐôÔí³ÔþÎ ¼ÔbÌô  However, it [the earth] did not do this,  ,öÑ×íÖ³ÐNÖ¼êGê−ÌíÐî
 In the midst of the waters. 33  .íÄéÈnÇä CBúÀa  but rather: “The earth sprouted forth. . .  ’îèî ±ÓþÖêÖíêÑ®BzÔî :êÖlÓê
                              a tree producing a fruit,”  −ÌþÐtíÓNB¼ ±Ñ¼
 [Here the meaning is] in the middle of the waters.  .óÌ−ÔnÔí¼Ô®ÐôÓêÐa
 Because the separation between the upper waters  ó−ÌòB−ÐñÓ¼ÖíóÌ−Ôôö−ÑaLÑþÐõÓíLÑiÓL  but the tree itself was not a fruit.  ,−ÌþÐt±Ñ¼ÖíêGÐî
 and the canopy  .Ô¼−ÌšÖþÖñ  Therefore, when Adam was cursed  óÖðÖêñÑlԚгÌpÓLÐkCÖ×−ÌõÐñ
                                       for his sin,  BòBμñÔ¼
 is the same as between the canopy  Ô ¼−ÌšÖþÖíö−ÑaBôÐk
                 it, [the earth] too, was punished for its sin  dÖòBμñÔ¼ê−ÌíóÔèíÖðКÐõÌò
 and the water that is on the earth.  .±ÓþÖêÖíñÔ¼ÓLóÌ−ÔnÔñ
                               and was [also] cursed.  :íÖñÐlԚгÌòÐî
 You may infer from this  ,ÖzÐðÔôÖñêÖí
 that they [the heavens] are suspended [in space]  óÌ−eñÐzóÑíÓL  With its seed within it.  .Bá BòÀøÇæøÆLÂà
 by command of the King.  :CÓñÓôñÓLBþÖôÎêÔôÐa  These are the kernels of every fruit  −ÌþÐtñÖk−Ñò−̼ÐþÔböÑí
           from which the tree grows when they are planted.  :öÖ³Bê ö−̼ЬBpÓLÐkÔìÑôB® öÖñ−ÌêÖíöÓíÑnÓL
 [7] Elohim made the canopy. 34  .ÇòéÄ÷ÈøÈäúÆàíéÄäGÁàNÇòÇiÇå [æ]
 [The interpretation is:] He fixed it in its position  ,BðÐôÖ¼ñÔ¼BòÐwÌz  [12] The earth brought forth, etc.  .'åâå ,õÆøÈàÈäàÅöBzÇå [áé]
                Though eíÑò−ÌôÐñ [of its own kind] was not said  eíÑò−ÌôÐñþÔôÍêÓòêHÓL−ÌtñÔ¼¹Ôê
 30  Thus ðìê óî− is rendered as “the day of the One.”  31  This implies that the heavens were being created now, on the
 second day. But, did they not exist from the first day?  32  Iyov 26, 11.  33  µî³ë can be defined as: 1) amongst, or 2)  43  ¼−þïô is in the causative form, i.e., to cause growth elsewhere.  44  In Hebrew the adjective follows the noun. Thus,
 in the middle.  34  There is a difficulty here.
