Communicate in the workplace
3.5 Developing and refining ideas
New ideas and methods will aid in improvements at work. The ideas and methods
need to be improved for continuous progress at work. The inputs for ideas and
methods can be obtained from colleagues or clients. This can happen either in a
formal way through meetings or in an informal way during break times. Targeted
questions must be posed for internal and external resources to get the effective
output.
Internal sources
• Colleagues
• Manager/supervisor/team leader
• Human resources
• Finance department
• Policies and procedures manual
External sources
• Customers
• Suppliers
• Internet
3.6 Feedback
The ideas and methods can be further improved by seeking feedback. Feedback
can be obtained by simple questions, reviews, meetings and surveys. Feedback can
also be obtained from colleagues or clients.
Internal sources
• Colleagues: for feedback on the new idea or approach.
• Manager/supervisor/team leader: for details about the availability of time,
resources and equipment needed to practically implement the new idea or
approach.
• Human resources: for information and assistance with administration, training and
legal requirements.
• Finance department: for information about budget constraints, payments,
preferred contractors etc.
• Policies and procedures manual: for information about the organisation’s mission,
core values and standards.
