Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Sit the children in a circle and ask the first child to say the name of a
person, the second child a place and the third a thing. Continue in this way
around the circle.
3. Refer to the nouns hidden around the room last week and ask why some had
capital letters and some had small. Explain that there are several kinds of
nouns. Two of these are common nouns and proper nouns.
4. The children could be given a tiny piece of chocolate from an unknown bar
and a piece cut up from a named bar. Discuss the difference. (Chocolate is a
common noun but the named bar has a capital letter because it has a proper
name.)
5. Let the children suggest some other proper nouns to write on the board.
6. Make two lists, one of common nouns such as cat, dog, boy, girl, town, sweets
then let the children suggest proper names for each of these common nouns
to create a proper noun list, e.g. Whiskers, Bonzo, Tom, Linda, Witney,
Smarties.
