Men’s Shelter – Dining Room
The next morning -- during breakfast -- Alonzo sits next to a middle-age man.
SAM RUEBEN, 63-year-old, fit and well kept. The Cameroon-born, retired restaurant
manager, and father of three daughters has a brown sweat suit and a pair of sneakers.
However, Alonzo barely touches the meal; it’s greasy and fatty, and the red
beverage is drowning in sugar for his taste. Face squeezes, “Oh, boy ... Diabetes’
haven.”
“Just take a bite or two. These folks here will be happy to eat the rest.”
Alonzo glares at Sam without a word.
Later, the two men step outside. A small cup of coffee in hand, Sam walks
alongside Alonzo. “My friend I don’t get it ...” persuading Alonzo, “... You don’t
belong here.” “You should be in Atlanta, Dallas or Houston.”
Alonzo looks surprise, “don’t have contacts in these places.”
“True it’s not going be easy ...” expression of disbelief, “... but your odds are
better in those cities.” Sam continues, “some folks here have done serious crimes...”
He turns and glares around, “... Including having done time for murder, kidnapping,
extortion, and even gang banging.”
Much more curious, “can’t imagine. What about you, Mr. Rueben?”
