6.- Los países del Golfo han vivido un fuerte
descenso de la construcción en los últimos
tres años. El continuo descenso del precio
de la energía ha hecho que circule mucho
menos dinero en la región. Los proyectos
relacionados con la Copa Mundial de Fútbol
de 2020 y con la Expo de Dubai continuarán,
por supuesto. Pero el mercado en general es
ahora mucho menor y muy sensible a los
precios. Se habla mucho del exceso de ofer-
ta hotelera y de viviendas en los Emiratos.
Irak se ha convertido en un raro punto bri-
llante. El mercado de Arabia Saudí depende-
rá principalmente de las obras públicas.
Algunas personas están entusiasmadas con
Siria, ahora que se acerca el final de la gue-
rra, pero deberá pasar algún tiempo antes de
que comience la reconstrucción. La nueva
capital que se está construyendo en Egipto y
la inversión pública harán que haya más
demanda de piedra natural, pero mucha de
esa demanda será cubierta por las nuevas
fábricas de mármol y granito propiedad del
gobierno que se han creado y por las empre-
sas locales. Los otros mercados del Norte de
África deberían mantenerse estables. Como
en Egipto, en Argelia y Marruecos, y posible-
mente en Túnez, debería continuar el des-
arrollo de la industria local de piedra, ya que
sus gobiernos tratan de crear oportunidades
de empleo.
7.- India presenta unas cifras impresionantes
de crecimiento económico, del 7 al 7,5%. A
estas alturas, mucha gente ha esperado un
boom de la construcción, pero los balances
de los bancos tienen que limpiarse antes de
que esto ocurra. La demanda de piedra natu-
ral se mantiene bastante bien, pero no se
espera que llegue a niveles cercanos a los
de China. En general, las empresas que ven-
den en el mercado local seguirán viendo un
crecimiento estable de sus negocios. ¿La
nueva industria del mármol del sur? Eso ya
es una noticia antigua. Se espera oír más de
instalaciones de nuevas fábricas de cuarzo a
medida que pase el tiempo, y se va a crear
poco a poco un nuevo y moderno clúster de
granito en Rajastán.

6. The Gulf countries saw through a sharp
drop in construction activity during last 3
years. The continuing low energy prices
mean there is much less money flowing
around in the region. Projects related to the
World Football Cup in 2020 and the Expo in
Dubai will, of course, continue. But the ove-
rall market is much smaller now, and very
price sensitive. There is much talk of over-
supply in hotels and housing in the Emirates.
Iraq has become a rare bright spot. Saudi
Arabia market will depend mostly on govern-
ment projects. Some people are excited
about Syria now that the end of the war is in
sight, but it will be quite some time before
reconstruction takes place. The new capital
being built in Egypt and government spen-
ding means there will be more demand for
natural stone, but most of that demand will
be fulfilled by the several brand new marble
and granite government owned factories that
have come up, and by the local companies.
The other North African markets should
remain stable. As in Egypt, in Algeria and
Morocco, and possibly Tunisia, more deve-
lopment of the local stone industry should
continue with governments looking to create
opportunities for employment.
7. India has impressive economic growth
figures, around 7 to 7.5%. By now many peo-
ple had expected booming construction acti-
vity, but the balance sheets of the banks
have still to be cleaned up before this takes
place. The demand for natural stone remains
fairly decent, but by no means is it expected
to reach a level anywhere close to China.
Generally speaking, the companies selling in
the local market will continue to see steady
growth in their business. The new marble
industry in the South? That is old news now.
Expect to hear more about new quartz facto-
ries coming up as time passes by, and a new
modern granite cluster coming up in
Rajasthan.
