Each hair follicle is surrounded by numerous sebaceous glands (4) that lie in
the connective tissue of the dermis (7) and in the angle between the hair follicle
and the smooth muscle strip called the arrector pili muscle (6). When the
arrector pili muscle contracts, the hair stands up, forming a dimple or a goose
bump on the skin, at the same time forcing the sebum out of the sebaceous gland
(4) into the lumen of the hair follicle and the epidermis.
