6 VIRTUAL DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION

The use of Virtual, Design & Construction (VDC) technologies and resources is becoming more common on projects
of all sizes, but must be considered essential for Mega Projects. Critical to this effort is the early development of a
BIM Implementation Plan at the start of the preconstruction phase. Haskell’s VDC Group is well equipped to provide
important services throughout preconstruction and construction to enhance and support design coordination, estimating,
scheduling, site planning, construction modeling development and coordination, layout, quality control and more.

                      BIM COORDINATION

Creation of a construction model with fabrication level of development is critical for most projects. Mega Projects are
more at risk due to their complexities, but also due to their sheer size. For Mega Projects, more consideration must be
given to what should be modeled. This is critical, to ensure the constructability of the project, to properly and efficiently
coordinate the work, to more accurately schedule the work, and to avoid project delays due to poorly coordinated work.
Any subcontractors or vendors modeling for the project must be properly qualified and coordinated with the VDC group.

                      SITE UTILIZATION + LOGISTICS PLANS

The development of comprehensive model-based site utilization and logistics plans provides project teams with a
more accurate and efficient means to evaluate, coordinate and plan work on the entire site both horizontally and
vertically including any existing or future underground utilities and structures. These models should incorporate all
stationary temporary facilities and utilities, and may even include elements such as temporary shoring or elevated work
platforms where accurate and proper coordination is needed to progress more work within the same work areas.

                      LASER SCANNING

Laser scanning of existing facilities is becoming more common to support a more coordinated design. However,
collecting and evaluating as-builts for critical portions of work as it progresses is equally important. Timely and properly
done, work in progress can be adjusted more quickly and cost effectively than once a problem is identified later in
construction. Critical components of work may include, but are not limited to, foundations, precast, structural steel,
supports for curtain wall systems or other building envelope systems and process/packaging equipment. Scanning
can also be performed by surveying using drones to capture existing site conditions, work in progress such as tracking
the cut/fill of a large site, or the checking the accuracy of work being installed such as foundations or site utilities.

                      LAYOUT

Layout of work has historically been passed on to our contract partners from a risk perspective. However,
with the technologies and resources available today through Haskell’s VDC Group, the company is now
in a better position to provide detailed control and, in many cases, actually perform the layout of work
for others where it is necessary to ensure the accurate installation of critical components of work.
