LESSONS LEARNED
LOOKING AT OUR PAST FOR A BETTER FUTURE
As move forward with our new Mega Project strategy it is important to also look to the past. We present you
with case studies of three prior large scale projects completed in the last 10 years. Each project was different in
delivery method, contract type and had different challenges to overcome. Most importantly, each project had
lessons learned that came from the project upon completion. There are some similarities and differences between
the lessons that were extracted from each project, but ultimately a summary of important program-focused
lessons were identified for each project and are listed in each case study to assist in developing future projects.
1 DIAGEO LINE (Q3 2010 - Q4 2013)
The Diageo line strategy project was a transformation of Diageo’s bottling supply chain in North
America. Diageo is the world’s leader in spirits sales, capturing more than 30% of the global market.
Their manufacturing footprint was the result of multiple purchases and mergers over the course
of the 20 years prior to the project. As a result, most of the bottling infrastructure was aged and
redundant with infrastructure available at other existing manufacturing sites. Diageo evaluated
all their bottling facilities and lines in North America and scoped an optimization project that
consolidated sites and replaced existing packaging lines with modern and more efficient bottling
lines. This allowed them to eliminate two sites and the costs associated from their manufacturing
footprint, while driving down their costs percase of bottled spirits through efficiencies in both
the new bottling lines and efficiencies gained in production scheduling with the new footprint.
Diageo redistributed the SKUs of their most popular products across two facilities. This included
new packaging lines, decommissioning of old facilities and packaging lines, and the facilities and
blending upgrades required to support the new packaging lines. The project reduced the number of
bottling facilities from four to two and reduced the total number of packaging lines from 21 to 11.
