before. But this joy was quickly wiped out when later
that day he heard the house bell ring and then saw
Thomas and Kate go into his room. They had decided
to come and visit him after the party. They talked and
laughed together. James was having a good time and
had almost forgotten all about this story until
Thomas talked again about the forest. James tried to
act natural, but he was terrified. Thomas offered to
go, which Kate immediately agreed to and said:

“Oh yes, it's going to be great, I'm sure!”

“Uh... are you sure? Wouldn't you rather stay?”
James asked James hesitantly.

“If you want to stay it's okay, we'll both go with Kate.
If you want Kate, we can even ask Charlie to come
along” Thomas answered maliciously.

“It's okay, I'm coming” replied James, annoyed. He
took a knife, however, which he hid in his pocket as
they left. On the way they met Charlie walking
around. Kate suggested he come despite James and
Thomas' protests. Charlie agreed, giving the two
boys a fierce look. The entry into the forest was done
in the same way as the previous time, Thomas killed
the bird after telling the others to hide. James was
intrigued, he couldn't understand why the bird was
still there and especially why Thomas killed it? This
